Guest Clay008
So I was thinking today....What would be the best for concealed carry? I personally will carry a semi-auto when I get my permit in a week or two. When being attacked (someone right in your face) I would think a wheel gun and a semi-auto would both be about equal with the wheel gun possibly little bit better because they are capable a shooting a more potent round such as a 357mag or 44 mag and, if you don't have a good grip on the wheel gun it will fire without the worry of a stove pipe or something similar occuring. When being offensive (engaging a shooter in a mall) I would think a semi-auto would be better because they have more rounds typically and a quicker reload. Lets hear what everyone thinks. johnf
If a simi misfires you'll have to jack the old shell out possibly giving the attacker time to get closer or disarm you. With a wheelgun you just pull the trigger again and more than likely it will go boom. I would much rather have 5-7 shots at a target that I know will go off than 15 that I think will. LifeNRA
Practice, practice, and practice some more! Re-guardless of what gun you use, you need to be able to hit your target at any range! But I would stick with a semi, because with your practice sessions you will know whether the gun works properly! Keeping it in TIP TOP SHAPE! Which means keeping it cleaned and properly oiled, the gun should NEVER mis-fire or stove-pipe! Use quaility ammo, and stay away from reloads for your carry gun! Re-loads are ok for target shooting. But not for personal carry! Just my $.02!
Guest Clay008
You mentioned quality ammo above. I typically shoot Winchester (white box) or Federal (American Eagle) when at the range and keep hydroshoks in the pistol when at home. I shoot the hydroshoks periodically to get a feel for how they shoot. They shoot nice and smooth with less muzzle flip than the Winchesters or American Eagle. It was amazing to see the difference. Reloader
My personal opinion on wheel vs Semi though is that modern Semi pistols when properly cared for are just as reliable in a pinch as a wheel gun. That said, whatever you are most confident in will be the best for you. If you feel a wheel gun is more reliable then you will use it with greater confidence. If you feel that having a few extra rounds up the pipe is reasuring then a semi may give you that extra boost of confidence. I totaly agree with practice no matter what you are using. Remember, Practice boosts two things Confidence and Competence. Both are essential. Use quaility ammo, and stay away from reloads for your carry gun! Re-loads are ok for target shooting. But not for personal carry! Just my $.02! I gotta disagree with Life NRA here. Factory ammo designed for personal protection is great I am not arguing that, but I was raised to reload for anything truly esential. My plinking reloads and my hunting/protection reloads are two different concepts though. I hunt with ammo I reloaded from quality components and uniform everything on every round. Again it comes down to Confidence. I know I took every care in developing, testing and assembling my critical reloads. That extra involvement and control gives me an extra boost of confidence. So for me it is the best choice. That doesn't make it the best for everyone...and if you have a buddy reloading for you...well I hope you trust your buddy but, sorry, I wouldn't use someone elses reloads for personal protection or hunting. (I do use my dad's reloads...but only in his guns and only becuase he taught me how to reload...I know he knows his stuff and pays attention to the details.) If you trust your reloads, thats great. I know I can trust my reloads as well. I fired tens of thousands of rounds from my 9mm, .380, and the .357. I know what makes them guns tick and what they like the best. I made this statement before, and coming from several police departments, two of them were on the national level. All of which told me the same thing! If your involved in a shooting for personal protection. Your gun and ammo will be taken for testing. They will find out what your shooting. Having factory ammo will help just incase the family of said "idiot", or the "idiot" themself you shot decides to take YOU to court! It could hurt you if you are reloading a round that the court deems to be a HOT LOAD! Which is silly to begin with, because dead is dead! But that is the way this country is now! Don and I had this conversation before, but when other police departments tell me this, I kind of tend to believe them. Why take the chance? Dont get me wrong! I saved tons of money making my own rounds! Enjoyed doing it as well! Which is why I never sold any of my equipment.

I had never heard that before...but I must say it goes beyond "silly". That is the stupidest line of lawyer talk I have heard in a long time. Fortunately I don't go for "hot loads", just reliable ones.
