Bachflock
Basic variables: Shots 100 yards or less, open field to mature forest. I realize that is pretty broad but that's about what I'd be looking at. What do you think the best all-around caliber for those circumstances would be? huntinguide
any .22 caliber....... .223 is the cheapest 22-250 is the flatest
Jeramie
.223 is a decent choice. .22-250 is also a great choice Personally id look into a .243. Great ammo available pretty reasonable and you can tote it into the deer woods.
Hardwood_HD
i bought a 22-250 for yotes last fall but i havent shot one with it yet, i think ill head out after them again after turkey season ends
Shaun_300
The .22-250 is an awesome caliber for yotes, wolves and groundhogs, that's what I use mine for. It'll reach out a long ways to kill em too.
Bachflock
I'm not that familiar with the 22-250. I'm going to have to do some research on it. Who makes an affordable model? Not cheap but affordable. Other suggests greatly appreciated as well.
Hardwood_HD
my 22-250 is a Savage and its been great so far, the scope that came with it is sort of cheap but i planned on getting a new one anyway

From what ive seen ammo isn't as cheap as others, such as the .223 and .243. They are a good long range gun but IMHO they wont do anything a .243 with varmint rounds wont do. Either Gun is capable of 300+ yard shots if the shoot is capable.
bobw
. .223 all the way 40 grain soft points not exp. no recoil not real loud.Check on twist in barrel before buying NEW GUN talk to good sales person...

Not cheap but affordable. Other suggests greatly appreciated as well. the .22-250 is a great flat shooting gun, it is a little more pricey but i believe its worth it, as for models, i would go with a savage if in your price range, if not look into the stevens model 200, thats what i got, made by savage, its pretty much the same gun except a shorter barrel and does not have the accutrigger, i love my stevens shoots great, and very affordable, got my stevens and a 3-9x40 scope all for just a tad over 300 bucks, the gun shoots great and is very accurate and precise
wtnhunt
Depends on whether or not you plan to sell the hides. If you are not selling the hides, would think pretty well any deer rifle for the use you say you intend would be pretty effective on yotes. Have a .223 ordered that when I get it, it will become my primary varmint rifle. The .223 hopefully will be a good long range shooter and more cost efficient to practice with then the deer rifles. Have used both .243 and a .270 here for yotes and they are effective.
Bachflock
I own a .22 LR but I was thinking it would be too light. I know someone who shoots for the pelts and he is using a .223 (I believe). I'd likely shoot them for the pelt so a smaller calibur would be better. I own a .30-30 Marlin lever action - over kill I'd guess.
booner1331
223, 22-250 or 204 Ruger....... are all great Coyote calibers
ODH
i just bought a new Savage Model 12 series varmiter in .22-250. i love it and it is a very good, accurate gun. i payed around $900 for mine but that's with the scope, bipod, etc. and its stainless, bull barrel, fluted, and has an oversized bolt handel which is why it costs alittle more. its fairly cheap to shoot depending on what ur gun likes best. Guest bonecollector34
It has been said, but I will agree. It depends on if your recovering and selling hides or just predator controlling an area. I have shot alot of coyotes and found calibers like 25-06 and 7mm even my .338 punch right thru, no damage and drops em dead. Occationally my .223 will drop em right in their tracks but plows the hides and a .22 hornet and such is just a bit on the small side--recovery is quite limited IMO. .22 is wonderfull for foxes(if your not getting them from the den) and prairie dogs. I shot a really nice 32lb--41" bocat this winter using my 25-06 while calling dogs... Fatty

dlriggins
for shots less than 100 yds I use a marlin 336 in 35 rem it is overkill but I have yet to hit one and it get away on the other hand I have used an AR15 as well as a Mosin Nagant 91 in 762X54 the Mosin is cheap and you can buy amo for pennies a shot I have scored on yotes at better than 200yds with it avg price for a M N about 65 to 125 bucks
wtnhunt
This months field and stream had a writeup on different rounds and ratings for different types of game. The .223 remington was rated the best all around varmint round by that writer. In second was the .220 swift, followed by the .22/250. Bachflock
This months field and stream had a writeup on different rounds and ratings for different types of game. The .223 remington was rated the best all around varmint round by that writer. In second was the .220 swift, followed by the .22/250. Yeah, I read that one. I watched a show today and they were shooing a .223 - I like it. That being said I've never shot it. So, I'll hunt with my .22 LR or even my .30-30 for now until I can afford a .223. My concern is keeping it humane (.22 LR seems to light) and the .30-30 will be a pelt killer. My only other option for now would be one of my shotguns - I might as well stick with the .30-30. CrAzYCoYoTe
I say (as an experienced yet young coyote hunter) the .22-250 or the .223 is great.
