dogdoc
I have never used loctite when mounting my scope but I have heard of people doing it. Just wondering how many of you use this product and which loctite do you use? Aren't there different ones with stonger adhesive properties? And if you use them do you ever have problem removing the screws later? thanks todd
tedicast
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? If you have any intention of removing the base from the gun, I would use the blue loctite. The red loctite will almost make it permanent. They will both work well for stopping the screws from backing out.
too_pointer
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? dogdoc, this is what I use. Loctice Removable #242. It comes in a red bottle, but like tedicast said, is blue in color. Make sure is says removable right on the container. It does the job too_pointer
JimT
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? Yup... I use the blue stuff also. Works great.

AJ
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? Yes. I use it on all screws involved in scope mounting, bases and rings.
mitrrophybowhunter
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? If you have any problems removing screws that have been tightened with Loctite heat it just a little bit. This will bring it back to its liquid state. Of course you want to be very careful whening doing this. It does not take much. Also for gods sake do not do this when the rifle is loaded......LOL

If the water is very hot, it will evaporate quickly and won't cause any corrosion on the metal.
AJ
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? I use a soldering iron on the screw head for a little while. It is easy to keep the heat localized and heats the screw enough to allow the thread locker to loosen.

AJ
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? You have to take them to a lot higher temps than it takes to soften the thread locker to loose temper. As long as they don't glow red, you are ok. I have used a MAPP gas torch on occasion when someone used red locktite and nothing else would work. The screws were fine afterwards. Gator
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? Todd, there is another grade of LOCTITE that I would recommend, it is LOCTITE 222, made specifically for smaller fasteners to 1/4". The 242 is made for fasteners above 1/4". The 242(blue) is a bear to break loose, whereas the 222 isn't, although both are service removable.
AJ
Re: using loctite on scope mounts? I degrease the hole and the screw with acetone prior to adding the LT. I put a drop of LT on the threads and thread the screw in the hole. Let the LT dry for 24 hours before using at the range.
