My son and baseball

I am so proud, I just have to brag.

My son, yeah the one that started the kid pitch baseball season as a rookie this season, played his next to last game of the season last night. Yep, the same son that was running from the batter's box--as soon as the pitcher started his wind up--earlier in the season. Yeah, that one.

He got his first hit and a game ball about a month or so ago and was proud. We have been working hard since, sometimes begrudgingly on his part. Well, last night he batted three times in the game. They almost called the game because we were ahead and were the home team so there really was no need to bat our last bat.

First time up, he hit a mile high pop up and the pitcher made an oustanding play on it. I am talking major league play on that catch.

Second time up, he hit a lazer beam that the pitcher was able to get the very edge of his glove on and knock down. He was thrown out at first.

Third time up, he hit a rocket through the gap into the right field.

Now, that isn't anything to alert the President over but this kid has turned into one of the better hitters (of kid pitchers anyway) on the team. Other players hit more but usually off the coaches. He has earned his hits the hard way. Oh yeah, he made two outstanding plays from right field...cutting off one runner at second to prevent him from advancing and cutting off another player with a one-hopper to third base from right field.

The coach gathered everyone together after the game to present the game ball and said "we're giving this game ball to a player who hit all three times he was up and got on base once and is hands down our most improved player of the year". I was beaming but more importantly he was beaming.

We talked to the other team's coach after the game (my son's friend plays on the opposing team) and he complimented my son on his skills. He was shocked that he was a first year player who started in kid pitch instead of coming up through tball. Apparently, my son's coach was bragging on my son to the other coach.

All in all, I am as happy as a pig in slop right now. You would have to know the whole story of my son to realize how big of an accomplishment this was and how important it was that he succeed in this. His confidence is way up right now.
