JimT
Re: Bow setup for turkey I got my fall bird last year with a bow. Used a 70# bow with a Snyper broadhead.
VermontHunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey Glad this question was asked since I intend also to try using the Bow on Turkey's this spring.. One question tho, how much damage is caused by a broadhead ???
Strut10
Re: Bow setup for turkey [ QUOTE ] I think that the poundage depends on what you can easily pull and hold with the minimum amount of movement.........shot placement is still the most important element regardless of poundage and broadhead selection but you know that already. [/ QUOTE ] Ditto. I would tell you to use the same exact setup you use for deer. The only exception may be that you would wanna turn the weight down a few pounds.......not much. VtBowhunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey Different broadheads do different amounts of damage. A spitfire will shread a bird's breast meat. Trust me, fellas, you start out saying I'm going to use the bow for a few days and before you know it the season is over and the shotgun never came out of the cabinet, lol. VermontHunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey Hmmm. the spitfire doesn't seem like a good choice then..What do you recommend ??? I know I can blast a Turkey with the shotgun but I have yet to take one with the bow and really want to give it a try. I feel if I don't get a bird this spring I can honestly say I tried... NY911Bowhunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey There is nothing wrong with the Spitfire - in fact that is what I shall be using this spring. In the area you shoot a turkey, with the exception of the head on shot - you aint gonna chew up nothing really edible anyways! (correct me if that is incorrect please!) Last Spring I put a Cabela's expandable into the breat of a broadside tom at 25 yards - lost him. Hit was too far forward.
Chrud
Re: Bow setup for turkey I would try the Gobbler Guillotine. It has four razor sharp blades that make a HUGE cutting diameter. Shoot 'em in the head!
VermontHunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey A headshot Uh...I guess this is going to take alot of practicing on my part..LOL
NY911Bowhunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey Yeah that thing is unbeleivable! how the heck do they fit in a quiver! Ever see the trailer that came out last spring for them? I saw it at Cabela's - phenomanol!
EKYhunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey The first thing you need to get is a blind. I hunt out of a double bull but my hunting buddy recently purchased an ameristep blind from Cabelas. It has realtree camo and has a hub system like the double bull. A blind will allow you draw without being seen and lets you relax, stretch your legs, eat lunch, get out calls, etc.. without being seen. Also lets you draw when the bird presents the shot so a lower poundage isn't really necessary. I've taken birds with my q2 set at 65 pounds shooting beman 340's with 125 grain muzzys. These work great and the birds I've shot are broken down and only flopped a little. I shot one that jumped straight up and fell dead. I do think that the rocket hammerhead would be an awesome choice. That large cutting diameter would be really beneficial and penetration would not be an issue like it would say for deer. I bought some eastman mechanical heads from K-Mart last week which were on sale. They have a 1.5 inch cutting diameter and shhot great. They're also very sharp. One thing I've seen that would be handy for bowhunting turkeys is a guide to shot placement published by the National Bowhuntter Education Foundation. It has illustrated guides that show internal organs and their locations. Good luck!
mo_hunter
Re: Bow setup for turkey I shoot the same lbs for turkey as I do deer . I have killed turkey with muzzy and rocket sledgehammer. You have a much better chance recovering a turkey with a large mech. broadhead. Hunting from A ground blind will allow you to draw without being picked off. Good luck
