Benelli Super Nova

This will be my first shotgun that I will be getting for next deer season in Minnesota and Montana. I will be getting a slug barrel for it and all that. I was wondering if anyone has used one before and what they exactly think about it. Any other tips or information on it would be most appreciated.

Thanks much

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with a Nova instead. My hunting shop carries a used one in awesome condition for $320. All I would have to do is order the barrel and get a scope. A lot cheaper than the brand new Super Nova.

You need to plan a purrtty penny for that barrel ... benelli slug barrels are almost as much as the gun ... and they are sometimes very hard to get

just a heads up

Get a Supernova. You won't be disappointed.

I traded in my 870 20 GA and a Charles Daly pump that I won in a raffle and paid a couple hundred more and got a Supernova 24" last summer, and put an easy hit sight on it. I love it to death!

At first the brand new gun will make you wonder, but after about 100 rounds or so it is a buttery smooth action that, when held upright will drop the bolt 3/4 of the way down when you hit the pump release. It also has the Comfortech stock, which is amazing! Not only does is seriously dump recoil (even 3.5" steel loads aren't too bad), it can be adjusted to a custom fit by adjusting drop and cast, which is the reason I got it over a nova. I need a longer drop than most people, so all I did was remove the stock via a nut just under the recoil pad, added a couple shims, and had a custom fit shotgun in a matter of minutes.

You can also get 3 different lengths of recoil pads to adjust length of pull. I believe 13.5", 14", and 14 3/8". 14 3/8" comes standard. Also, for your slug barrel, you can get an extra high comb insert for the top comfortech module so you can still get a good cheek weld with a scope. This, too can be changed in a minute with your 2 hands.

Another advantage over the Nova is the larger trigger guard to accomodate thick gloves in cold weather. At first I hated the look, but I like it now.

Aside from the stock setup, receiver shell, and trigger guard, it is exactly the same as the Nova. All part numbers are the same.

Another thing that I really like about it over some pumps that I've used is the fact that under normal clean use, there is basically NO powder residue in the action of the gun. I'm not sure why, but the other day I shot 25 rounds at clays, brought it in, tore it down to clean it, and there was absolutely nothing to clean except the barrel. Of course it's gonna get dirty walking through weeds/brush, but I like it. You will also love the disassembly procedure.

1. Remove magazine cap

2. Remove Barrel

3. Use magazine cap nub to start pushing trigger group pins out

4. Hook the heads of the pins on the other side with the inner lip of the mag. cap, pull out

5. Remove trigger group

6. Jiggle forearm/unlink forearm and bolt but simply moving guide bars down to disengage the bolt

7. Pinch bolt lengthwise rotating the rotary locking lug, pull bolt

8. Clean and lube

9. Reassemble

10. Note that this a COMPLETELY toolless takedown, meaning if you have a jam from debris, you can do a complete field strip within a minute. Just to see how fast I could disassemble, I timed myself and had it down to forearm/guide bars, barrel, trigger group, bolt, and stock/receiver in 25 seconds, and reassembled in 37.

It is a heavy gun (so is the Nova), but I find the balance to be quite nice. It will snap right up to my shoulder/cheek and stay there, but it doesn't feel front heavy when swinging. I used to watch all of Tom Knapp's videos I could get a hold of, and worked my way up to 4 clays thrown by myself and broken with 4 individual shots with it. Once you get used to the gun, you can shoot very fast.

Thank you for letting me rant about my favorite pump gun in the world! While I have not shot a Nova, but handled one prior to purchasing the Supernova, I would recommend getting the Supernova if you can at all afford the extra $150 or so.
