Me and my kid went deer hunting tonight, he got cold sitting in the foodplot about 45 minutes before sunset so we walked out and got in the truck.Drove off, went around the corner, and there were 3 big does walking across a guys yard. His properties surrounded by public ground so we drove down the road aways, got out and walked down into a little pocket of trees next to the road on the public ground.Things happened pretty quick, we walked in from one side, the does walked in from the other, I sat down and they walked past about 40 yrds away, the biggest one stopped in a big opening and stared at us, I put t cross hairs on her shoulder and touched the Ml off.Her tail dropped, she hunched up and ran out.About that time a friend of mine came driving up so I flagged him down, and we visited for a minute, i knew she was dead and wasnt in a hurry. Finally we walked back to where I shot her, no blood, nothing there.i found her tracks going down a trail and followed them about 30 yrds, nothing.I backtracked and made sure I was on the right track, still nothing. Were going back out with flashlights in a couple hours, lotta coyotes out there and I dont know if I dare to leave her till morning. The shot felt good, my kid seen it hit her and said it looked good, but somethings not quite right with this picture frown.gif

Re: This dont look good

Three of us went back out, looked for 2 hours in the cold, didnt find anything, no blood, nothing to indicate she was hit.But the way she acted after the shot Im still 99% confident it was a good shot, gonna try it again in the morning for awhile and see what things look like in the daylight confused.gif

Sorry guys, I been outta town for a couple days.Like I said, three of us went and looked for 2 hours that night with no results.Next morning I went back alone and spent another hour looking, again i found no blood, or anything else.Apparently either I missed, which I cant believe after the way she acted, or something else happened i cant quite explain. confused.gif

Re: This dont look good

The old sidelock ml I used to hunt with, there was a couple deer I shot with that gun and never found any sign of a hit, but felt pretty confident I hit them. I retired that gun from hunting permanently. Just dont know what the deal was with it, but had bad luck.

Found out later that one of those that I had shot with that old sidelock and never found any sign on was in fact hit good and died under a stand belonging to one of the leaseholders just across the river on the property behind ours. That was probably no more than 150-200 yards from where that deer was standing when I shot it, but I never found any blood or hair anywhere.

The black diamond I now hunt with, in combination with the 240 grain xtp mags leaves some huge exits and the blood has been very easy to follow with them on the deer we have shot with them so far.

Too bad you did not find any sign. I know I have shot a few that I never found any sign of blood or hair, but did end up finding the deer. I would think based on what you said if you thought it was a hit, it probably was. Sure makes you sick to lose one.

Re: This dont look good

First deer I ever lost with this Ml wtn, so it aint the gun.The area I shot her in is thick nasty stuff, switchgrass taller thanI am in spots, lotta cattails, slough ground etc...Without blood or the deer dying immediatly its pretty tough to find em unless you get lucky and trip over em, visiblity is pretty bad in there.only thing I can figure is she made it into the cattails before she started bleeding good, but there still shoulda been some blood rubbed off in the switchgrass or showed uo in the snow.Im really baffled as to what hapened, im pretty sure shes dead but 4 hours of looking didnt turn up a speck of blood frown.gif

Re: This dont look good

Thats too bad Chris. I know you and I have talked about shoulder shots before, and you have had good luck with them. I have poked them before in the shoulder ( not because I wanted too), and like you, sometimes no sign of a hit. I have recovered the deer though. A shot behind the shoulder, most of the time, will allow much better penetration, thus a much better blood trail. I can't believe you couldn't even find any hair ! Hopefully you just plain missed and the deer is fine. We all miss, that is why it is hunting !! The next one won't be so lucky crazy.gif
