wtnhunt
At risk of seeming like a whiner, figured I would post a pic of my daughters current plot status. Should be seeing some little green sprouts starting, been instead with the lack of rain birds are eating the seed, had a bunch of frames on this trail camera where birds must have triggered it, here is one of a cardinal that was clear enough to make out. Still dry and here is what it looks like now just a week after planting.
hoytguy08
i don't think that the birds should seriously affect your plot, but rain would def. help
dogdoc
yep--that ground looks pretty darn dry. I still think you are better off waiting for a good rain instead of just putting enough water down to promote germination. Once they germinate they HAVE to have the water to survive. I bet there still is a lot of seed just under the surface waiting for mother nature to get them started. good luck todd
SoybeanMan
Showers here in Northeast Arkansas, so maybe they will head your way.
wtnhunt
Showers here in Northeast Arkansas, so maybe they will head your way. Showed rain on the radar maps go through here this morning about 2 miles to the west of us. Sun is out here, did not get a drop:( Was hoping to plant some beans in another plot soon. May end up being a bit late, but think I will wait until after we get some rain and then plant them.
SoybeanMan
WTN, if they were the beans I sent you, you can plant them through July 1 and still get excellent growth by frost. I have also planted soybeans in dry ground and it took them a month to come up when it finally rained, but I did not like it. Actually, the later planted soybeans have a better germination than early planted. This is why we delay our seed production fields.

No, this was a plot that my oldest daughter was involved in through the school and a state run 4h program. For the contest judging, all that was allowed to be used in that plot was te seed they provided. They hold a contest for the "best plot", several factors are looked at in the judging. Winners get prizes, top prize in the state is $500 and well, my oldest daughter was excited because she just knew that dad had a little experience with food plots and really in all honesty I think her expectations may have been a bit too high. No way we could know that the weather would have done what it did, the forecasted rains for a few days after we planted never made it and would have never thought we would be in this type of a dry spell in May. For me planting spring/summer plots not having rain fall on them within a relatively short time after planting is something that has just not ever happened, I really have been pretty lucky with figuring my timing in the past. The seed for that plot was provided by the 4h program, so we are not out anything there, but the seed if we would of had to paid for it would have been the cheapest part by far. We put down 250 lbs of fertilizer, 800 lbs of lime, not to mention the soil test, diesel, and roundup used for prepping this 1/6th acre plot. We are getting some on and off drizzle and occasional decent showers here today now, and looking like we are supposed to get the same tomorrow, I have no doubt what seed is there will germinate now, will be interesting to see how much seed was not lost though. I still have not planted the soybeans yet, will probably get them in the ground this weekend, should be enough moisture in the ground near the bottom where I plan to plant them so long as it continues on today like it has. Tominator
I was watching the radar yesterday William. Weather.com has a cool interactive radar map now, sort of like Google earth. I saw that W Tenn. got some rain, wondered if it hit you. How close are you to Jackson?
wtnhunt
How close are you to Jackson? Jackson is south of us. We got a pretty decent amount of rain yesterday, probably close to a half inch total for the day. Forecast is calling for a carbon copy today, but the sun has been out all morning here so far. Could sure use more rain, been three weeks now since I mowed the yard, think I will mow today. Weather.com has a cool interactive radar map now, sort of like Google earth. Yep, use that map all the time Chris, but for some reason when it tries to refresh the radar on its own it seems like it gets an error and shuts down all my explorer windows and tabs, so I usually dont leave it up long. wtnhunt
Well, a look this morning and I saw a few sprouts. Somehow afraid with the continued dry weather they are calling for for the next at least week, that plot is most likely going to have to be redone:(. Also noticed some scattered weeds growing:confused:. With two applications of roundup, dont know how they found their way into the plot:(, and as dry as it has been dont know how they are even growing:confused:.
