Guest mikemcd
i'm working on sighting in my bow and had a thought- is there a "standard" placement for sight pins- 20, 30, 40yds for example or is it pretty much a subjective thing? if so, does anybody have suggestions? i thought having down to 15 yards might be useful. thanks
Tominator
Pretty much subjective according to your bow, and what you're comfortable using at a particular range. Personally, mine are set at 10, 20 and 40.
wtnhunt
All depends on you. Was shooting a single pin for a good while. Currently on my bow am shooting 3 pins set at 20, 30, and 40 yards.
Guest bowhunter56
thats why i use a pendelum, sight it in at 20, and your good from 0 to 30.
BKE
I am in no way an expert so this is just what I experience with my 3 pin set up. It's set up as a hunting rig with pins at 20/30/40. I can shoot from 5yds out to 20yds while holding the 20 pin on the same mark and get good groups on the spot. I spray paint spots using the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper so we're talking the Dia. of a 50 cent piece or smaller so there's not really much need for a 10 or 15 yarder. JM 2cents worth. Good luck.
LifeNRA
Pretty much subjective according to your bow, and what you're comfortable using at a particular range. Personally, mine are set at 10, 20 and 40. What he said! Mine are set at 15, 25, 35, 45, and the last one is not set. Have no need for it. jnrbronc
Mine are set at 20, 30 and 40. I just bought and started reading "Bowhunting Trophy Whitetails" by Bobby Worthington. He suggests 16, 25.5, 30.5, 35.5 and 40.5 yard pins. His discussion as to why is interesting, but I don't think I'll be changing any time soon. Guest Finn
I have 2 pins set at 25 and 35 yards. These cover any shot I may make and keep the confusion factor to a minimum.
husker
i have my pins set to 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards. i bring a range finder with me and if it is a shot that is say 25 yards i split the difference between the 20 and 30 yards pin. works for me and as someone else said i am by no means an expert. and if your first pin is set to 20 yards you can cover most all ranges in from that. okiedog
It is all a matter of personal prefrence. I shoot 5 pin Spot-Hogg with the vertical wire and bubble level. I personally start with the top of the level at 80 yards. Once that is set I adjust my other pins, 20, 30, 40, 50, & 60 yards.
woodshed
On fast shooting bows, the drop is minimal at close yardages. This why having the first pin at 20 yards or so works. Inside that is basically wasting the pin I guess because the arrow is going to still be on target. I have mine at 20. 30. 40 with a 3 pin sight. Split the diff. if inbetween them. Inside 20 I put it right on and thwack!!

PAstringking
i have a 4 pin sight....set at 20-30-40-50 from 10-20 yards i have no difference in shot placement. i also shoot at 276fps.
Tom2008
Like others have said it all depends on the shooter of the bow. The sight is positioned on your bow compared to where your peep is and where you are most comfortable seeing all your pins through your peep. It is different for everyone. Someone could have their pins all lower in the circle around the pins or more to the left, right, or more towards the top.
