My buddy and I found some great hunting spots that we'd like to try out on public land. If any of you have hunted on public land, what have you done when you came up on someone who was in a spot? As far as the other side of things, what have you done if someone walked up on you while you were hunting?

Just not sure of the hunter's etiquete in cases such as these.

By the way, four more months to go for bow season. Got a Switchback before the end of last season and have been practicing monthly. Can't wait. Thanks in advance for the comments.

If I walk up on someone by accident I usually back track out. Just give a wave and turn around. I had a couple guys walk up on me last year. One did what I do and the other just kept on coming and passed thru my area. That kinda irritated me. The next day I found his stand about 50 yards behind me on the other side of the stream from where I was hunting. It was not there about a week before.... Nice huh.

The way I feel is treat them how you want to be treated. I carry a climber most of the time and have multiple trees. If somebody is near my stand I go to another tree. I do walk past them though. I'm not walking back out the the truck and going home just cause they are sitting there. I go by as quietly as possible and don't touch or try not to leave any scent at all behind. Got to understand...........You don't own the land.

If your hunting public land, its first come, first served! If you have a spot you want to hunt, get up early! If somebody is there when you show up, get up even earlier!!! I still hunt some public land, I just get up real early and beat anyone there! When somebody does show up, before dawn, I use my flash light to signal that there is somebody here! During the daytime hours, I speak in a normal voice and anounce my presence to them. Never be ugly when someone approaches!

when i hunt public land i use a flashlight to signal that im there when its dark. i use a normal toned voice when its day time. if someone is in my spot before i get there (usualy afternoon hunts) i will acknowledge that they are there and keep walking. on a peice of land i usually have at least 3 trees i can climb on a given day.

Any hunter on public land who is moving during legal shooting hours may push game to you or maybe it will be the other way around. What you do not want to happen is someone to sit near you just because that is where they were going to hunt, or worse yet, just because they saw you sitting there. If the other hunter seems unaware of your presence, then by all means let them know you are there. Courtesy is the key. The biggest buck my dad ever shot was the result of another hunter who, after stopping to chat, continued on his way and the buck circled around him and was still staring in the direction he went when my dad dropped him in his tracks.

If I see someone in a spot I usually keep my distance. If they notice me there I'll give a wave and then back out also. If someone walked up on me I would be quiet still because I'd rather not have the person find me there. I would only say something if the person was coming through while I was going into my stand. During rifle season we used to have a guy walk through around 7:00 in the morning and make a bunch of noise getting to his stand, which was only 100 yards from ours. The guy would then leave his stand only 2 hours later. That got pretty irritating, but we still seen deer go through.

I bow hunt of private land quite a bit. I like to identify many different spots that way I have a few back up places if there are other hunters in the area. I practice some of the same etiquette as the other posters. Treat other hunters as you would like to be treated. The only time I get irritated is when another hunter spots me and still walks across my setup to get to his. I decided long ago to just deal with it, as sometimes that kinda stuff comes with the territory when hunting on public land.
