Are you trying to draw Unit 46 or 47?

Unit 46 is everything Elk Mountain to Medicine Bow to Interstate 80. Unit 47 is everything North from Rock River to Medicine Bow.

I hunt both area alot every year, taken several really nice buck antelope in both areas. You won't have to look for praire dogs, they are everywhere--literally.

$575 for everything

gas

tags

food

housing

????:confused::confused:

If so that a HECK of a deal.

Yep, over the counter doe tags are two hundred and something. We are camping and eating at camp every day. We also have 3-4 guys to a truck and splitting the gas.

This group goes every year and last year they spent about $525 each. With Gas prices up they suggested figuring in another $50. Ill take a couple hundred extra to be safe.

We have to buy Tags on July 15th and then have the rest of the money ready to go in the last week in September.

I dont think I can draw now. We are getting over the counter Doe tags. I have no idea which unit. Ive never been hunting in Wyoming. Im just going with a group that goes every year. Id love to have a buck tag but from what I understand its to late to draw......

Im glad to hear about the Dogs! Ive never shot them. This should be a hoot!

Btw, Welcome to the forums!

Area 46 has about a 62% of drawing a buck tag while 47 has a 18% chance for non-residents. If nothing else you may enquire for a preference point, I am not sure that period is gone yet. I know for residents it hasn't.

Personally, they are both good areas and 46 has alot of land to hunt and good good goats, not sure if it would be worth risking an 18% chance to get a 62% in 46. As a non-redent, you are gonna have one choice to draw--all or nothing so to speak.

Thanks for the welcome I was dragged here by my buddy Buckee. He is a genuinely great person.

Also, so you are aware. Don't carry a varmit rifle while hunting goats. .243 or bigger. If a warden get on ya and you have a .223 or something it may blow a day of hunting. Once completed with your does, then crack out the varmit rifle. You will shoot the barrell out of it-targets everywhere. But be aware if someone is hunting goats and you spooking everything by plinking dogs, he may get PO'ed. Also depending in where your hunting, some landowners will NOT allow you to paraire dog hunt during a big game season. So find that out before splatting em.

I think its too late for me.

Question maybe you can answer. Its something like $250+ to put in for a buck tag. If you dont get drawn is that money gone? Id gladly put in for a Buck but would hate to have to cough up another 200+ for does after putting in and possibly losing that money on a buck......

Id also like to do some fishing. Are there any good water ways close by? I went after trout in Yellowstone and had a blast. Id love to see anything close to that again.

And about the only gun I will probably take is my .243 (Ruger M77). I thought about bringing my .270 or .30-06 but can use the .243 as a do all. Im going to load some .55grn Hornady V-Max for the small critters but will load some 100grn Hornady for the goats. After the hunt I can take about 5-shots and be back to zero for the varmint rounds. I may even just load all 100grn Soft points for the varmint and I wouldn't have to re sight anything.

Its a little heavy but it will split hairs.....

The period for a non-resident to put in for a preference point is not past. It is from July 1-Septemeber 30, this can be done via the internet on the state G/F website using form #30.

Non-resident antelope license are $226 plus a $12 application fee, if you do not draw you will recieve a preference point and all your $$$ except the $12 non refundable application blah blah fee, Now a bad deal. Also when applying you can put on additional doe tags for $29. So for $296 you can draw 1 buck tag and 2 does tags.

Rememeber, you can still apply for your preference point (the draw period is past) and have a great opprotunity to draw escpecially if you guys hunt unit 46, the preference point only fee is $30 for a goat.

Fishing....Hmmmm

The Miracle Mile is South of Casper maybe an hour and change from Medicine Bow. Pickaroon campground is 27 miles from Fox park into the mountains(lots of elk, bear, moose and bighorns in there)(also this is where the Douglas creek and the Platte river connect)which is West of Laramie. The Snowy Range mountains are 27 miles West of Laramie and has alot of very pretty fishing spots namely Lewis(nice fish), Marie, Libby(again nice sized fish) and Mirror lakes.

Im still not 100% clear but thats just me. This will be my first Out of state hunt. Okie born and raised. So basically, even if I dont draw out on a buck I get my money back (minus the measly $12)?! That would WAY be worth the chance. We are suppose to buy over the counter doe tags on the 15th (through channels up there) but if I can draw out on a doe and a buck! That would be awesome.

Im going to keep in touch. I really want to hunt a buck while im there. After this fall it will be a few years before I can head back up. This will be a once in every great now and then thing. I appreciate the information and hope to pry a little more out of you..... :D

Is Unit 46 near Shirley bason? Thats where everyone was talking about camping.

We are looking for public access land. Before they had camped south of there because a small unit had a lot of land. This year they wanted to head to shirley bason. Again, ive never been so its all new to me. Regardless, thats their plan. How far is 46 from there?

Thanks,

Jeramie

It is possible but it would have to be on the south side of HWY 287. Medicine Bow butts right against 47 and 46 as does Shirley Basin. Shirley also has a good elk population, they winter down along the HWY. A friend of mine got a smokin' 215 NT mule deer out of there a couple years ago.

On the draw/preference point issue. There will be no buck tag left for over the counter for this year, thus the less then 100% non resident draws results. They will all go on the 1st draw in early July. There will probably be OTC does for alot of areas.

But you putting in for a preference point will assure you in hunting a buck antelope in the near future, you just have to stay up on it, meaning keep getting your preference points on the years you aren't hunting in WY.

Carbon County, which is where you will be hunting, is one of the best places in the U.S. for a Boone & Crockett. I will see at least one every year but getting on him and getting the job finished is a different story.

Man I appreciate the info! If you dont mind Id like to pick your brain on occasion. This hunt will be my first ever and my last for a few years. I probably wont get to head back until around 2009. :(

Id like this to really pay off!

Thanks again. Oh and btw, I wouldnt admit that you know Steve (buckee). People's opinion of you might head down hill quick..... ;):p

Just Kidding, Steve is a good guy. ;)
