Guest RandyWakeman
Re: Henry Ball Interview [ QUOTE ] Mr. Wakeman. Thanks for sharing this interview. I surely learned a but and also gained some insight into the world of ML. As I read this interview I immediately came across two questions that I haven't thought about. One: What is the life expectancy of a ML barrel? I know that type of projectile and it's weight also type of propellant and maintenance affect all of this but is there a median expectancy? yrs or even rounds fired? What are guys getting out of their A&H ML with a good maintenance schedule? That answer surely won't affect the upcoming purchase but it might give me a ballpark idea. Two: Mr. Ball mentioned that Pyroxed RS is highly corrosive. In order, when comparing the different powders can you tell me what the least corrosive to most corrosive powders are? If you remember I want to shoot loose black powder and would like to know just how it fits into the "mix" of things. Thanks Dave [/ QUOTE ] Henry should be here to take a stab at this, but the life of a barrel is like the life of a car tire. All depends how you use it, and how and where you drive. Bench rest shooters may change out barrels every 1000 - 1500 rounds. In the case of muzzleloading barrels, you have infinite variables of use-- so there can be nothing approaching an accurate answer. I don't have any hard data on corrosiveness to share, but I'd rank the common BPs in this order: Triple 7 Blackpowder Pyrodex Triple 7 being the least corrosive as gluconic acid is the fuel-- and no sulfur means no sulfur salts can be part of the residue. too_pointer
Re: Henry Ball Interview Randy, that was a good article, thanks. The one thing I am concerened about was his remark= " Our muzzleloaders, fired with pyrodex, destroyed themselves within 3 years, or so " I know that was stated 4 years ago. I hope that manufactuers have made improvements with barrels since then.I wish he had stated how much shooting was involved. too_pointer
