The Gatorade twin 125s qualifying races, held before the Daytona 500, will now be called The Gatorade Dual and for the first time since 1969 the distance will increase. The races had been two 125-mile qualifying races. They'll now be a pair of 150-mile qualifying races. The extra 25 miles will take an extra 10 laps. So, instead of 50 laps, they'll now be going 60 laps, which will force teams to re-think their pit strategy. In addition, there will be an extended break with live entertainment between the two races.

This is the second time in the history of the event that the distance has been changed. From 1959-1968 the qualifying races were each 100 miles. In 1969 the races were extended to 125 miles.

The fastest two cars on Feb. 13 will start the Daytona 500 on the pole and outside pole. They both get to start on the pole for qualifying races. Drivers qualifying in odd-numbered positions will compete in the first race while drivers that qualify in even-numbered positions run the second race.

For the start of the 500, the top 14 finishers (not including the pole sitter) in the first race line up behind the pole sitter on the inside row while the top 14 finishers (not including the outside pole sitter) in the second race line up behind the outside pole sitter.

NASCAR may tweak the rules, but currently the next eight Daytona 500 starting positions (31-38) will go to the drivers with the fastest qualifying laps not in the show. The final five positions (39-43) go to provisionals based on 2004 owner's points.
