17 Mach 2 versus 17hmr

I went to a gunstore today and was looking at these too calibers. I am planning on buying a 17hmr Savage bolt action within the next month or two. Today was the first time I have seen a Mach 2. I have heard of it, but not seen it. Which one is better? I noticed the 17hmr shoots 2375 fps and the Mach 2 was 2100. I know speeds vary, but these were on the 2 boxes i picked up. How far will a Mach 2 accurately shoot(assuming the shooter has enough skill) compared to the hmr?

I think the 17hm2 was a little cheaper than the 17hmr. Is the hmr worth the extra few dollars?? Thanks for any help.

What are your main uses for the .17? The .17 is a really great caliber. If you are looking to use it for small game, I would say to check out the .22 Mag also. The .17 is faster and flatter, but being that small, it does lose energy really fast at long ranges. My .22 Mag is sighted in a 50 yards. It's still dead on at 25 yards and only about 4" low at 100 yards. That is fine for me, as I usually don't shoot squirrels or rabbits at 100 yards. wink.gif The .17 I have experience with is the HMR, and it is a very nice gun. The only negative I have about it is since it is a good target gun and a small game gun, it is actually really loud.

It really depends on what you want. What do you plan to do with the gun? Is it going to be a varmint gun, squirrel/rabbit gun (edible small game), predator gun, paper puncher, or what?

Both will have quite a bit of damage on edible small critters, so I would not recommend them. I would take a .22 lr over either of them for small game.

For varmints, either one will work. The HRM will extend the range a little.

For coyotes, I would take the HRM as it has more energy for cleaner kills.
