Guest Ironhorse
I may get a chance to hunt Illinois this year. In the past I have only used rifles or bows. I'm looking for some slug opinions. 12 gauge or 20? 2 3/4 ior 3 inch? Pump, auto, single shot? Please share your thoughts.
Master_Chief
I bought a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter. Shoot 12 Ga 2 3/4 slugs. I can shoot a group @ 100 yards you can cover with a coffee cup. I shoot Remington Copper Solid slugs. http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Shotguns/ultraSlug.aspx
hoss
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter. Shoot 12 Ga 2 3/4 slugs. Is probbly one of the best slug guns out there for the $. What ever gun / ga. you chose pratice. And shoot defferent slugs out of it to see what your gun likes best becouse all slugs will not shoot the same.Far as 2 3/4 over 3 in. I see no need for 3 in slugs for what little you gane is not worth the abuse your sholder will take with 3 in slugs. So I would shoot 2 3/4 just my opp.
MikeB
And shoot defferent slugs out of it to see what your gun likes best becouse all slugs will not shoot the same. I agree. In Indiana all we have are slugs. I think I spent $100 trying to find the right combination. I ended up going with Lightfield's. I get a nice "tight" group out to about 125 yards. Turkeygirl
I shoot a Mossberg 500 20 ga. with improved Cylinder choke...2 3/4" slug shells..usually Remington I think. It does the job every year, unless I miss, lol.
RangerClay
Pump, auto, single shot? Please share your thoughts. Buy a shotgun you are comfortable with. I use a semi when I go deer hunting. Then when I go turkey hunting with my pumpgun I always forget to rack out the next shell. Get a gun that you are used to shooting. I'm looking for some slug opinions. 12 gauge or 20? 2 3/4 ior 3 inch? I have hunted with slugs for 20+ years with five other guys and we have tried every slug out there. Personally my gun likes Brenneke slugs but my buddies have had outstanding performance from Lightfield slugs. Lightfields would be my first choice to start with if I bought a new gun. Once you buy your slug gun, buy 3 or 4 different brands and see what shoots best out of YOUR gun. It will be a little expensive but worth it in the end. Good Luck!! Maryland_Bowhunter
I use to shoot only 12ga until last season . I bought remington 20ga 870 I put a 18 1/2" cantileaver fully rifled barrel . I shot only one slug last season the rem corelokt (sp) 2 1/2 " I can tell you that it is the most accurate slug I have ever shot . I killed 8 deer last season with these slugs from 10 yards out to 80 yards and not one deer made it over 40 yards most feel straight down . If I were you I would look at either these in 20 or 12 ga
007hunter
Winchester has some newer slugs out that are part of their XP3 line that I might take a look for this year. They are only supposed to drop 4 inches at 150 yds and 12 inches at 200 yds which isn't bad at all for slugs. http://www.winchester.com/products/newitems/xp3slug.aspx
MichiganHunter
Hey i LOVE my slug gun.....i have a MOSS 695....BOLT action and it is a great gun.....i use 3in remington core lock ultra's and my best group at 120 yards is less than 3 inches with 2 of the 4 tuchin...i have a good scope on it and man it is SICK.....i droped a buck 2 years ago at 140yards puttin the cross hairs top of his back and entering right behind the sholder (slight quatering away) at 4in from bottom and distroyed his heart....i only hunt with that slug gun and i like 12 for the hole size but i do know 20 is supose to have better bollistics. http://forum.gon.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4382&stc=1&d=1108938167
Hoosierbuck
Rem. Core-lokt Ultras shoot great in every slug gun I have tried. Go with the H&R-most "bang" for your "buck"!
bulldawg
I only have a smoothe bore in my 12 ga. Rem. 1100, and the 2 3/4 Brenneke 1 1/8 oz. are like a sledge hammer hitting a 16 penny nail! They get the job done out to 90 yards, and that's all I need as I'm shooting rifled sights. From observing others in my group of 13, I've noted the Lightfields seem to be the most impressive. Been doing this for 35 years now, and I've hunted with groups up to 21 guys and gals. I guess the main thing is to see what impresses you, and take it from those experiences. You will find many different opinions, but experience is a fine teacher. Dawg
Matchthedeerslayer
Where i hunt we can only use slugs. What i prefer to use are any kind of remmington slugs out there. I also use a 870 pump in 2 3/4.
RangerClay
Here is another slug to concider. Be sure to click on the ballistics for both the 20 and the 12 gauge. The 20 gauge has only an 8" drop at 200 yards:eek: https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=3846e4c2c1602ebd47a546e850bccf20&page=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=d27c0a040bea71ad74e3d35d6bc0ec9e
Guest Ironhorse
I appreciate all of your suggestions. The H&R set up looks interesting. I kind of had 870 on my mind, but I'll definitely check that out. Do you shoot sabots out of a rifled barrel or a different configuration? Master_Chief
I shoot sabots. It is one sweet shooting gun.
Tecumseh
If you have a rifled barrel go with the sabots, smooth bore the remington 2 3/4 sluggers with a imp cylinder tube will do the job.
Sherk's Guide Service
I own a Savage Model 210 Bolt-Action 12 gauge. I am confident out to about 120-130 yards. Shoots real well with both 2 3/4 and 3 inch. My favorite slugs are Lightfield.
ilhnter
i use a 12 guage now, but i have used a 20 guage and it does the job no problems at all. All you need it 2 3/4 in. slugs. I've hunted with a shotgun in Illinois for 12 yrs now and i've always used 2 3/4 in. slug and thats all you need.
Mach1
I've got a 12ga 870 with a rifled slug barrel and TruGlo rifle sights and I started shooting the Remington Copper Solids last year. I tried the Lightfields, Copper Solids, and the Remington BuckHammers and all three shot the same out of my gun, but I went with the Copper Solids because I found a good deal on them. need2hunt
I shoot a Remington 870 Magnum SP, it is a 20 gauge and has the cantilever barrel and I have a bushnell 1.5 - 4.5 scope on it. Before I bought this gun I hunted several years with a 870 12 gauge. I hunt a mixture of hardwoods as well as large grass fields. My opinion is you'll kill just as many deer with a 20 as you will a 12 and you don't have to carry the extra weight of the gun. I've killed deer as close as 5 steps and as for as 200 yards. I shoot the remington CoreLoks and I can shoot consistently out to 200 yards with it.
ODH
i havent hunted deer with a gun here in Ohio ever since i started bowhunting, but i was using my Benelli with 3" Winchester rifled slugs. But it's hard to beat the Remington 870 with a slug barrel. Just make sure if u shoot copper slugs, make sure ur barrel can take them.
