bobw
. 30.06 is a much better all around gun for just about all big game...
Shaun_300
I agree with Bob, I'd defiently get a .30-06 over a .30-30.
johnf
I'm not a bear hunter, but I would think that a quick, hard hitting repeater would be a good plan. I would think about a marlin 336 in 444.
wtnhunt
Would think a 30-06 or a .308 would work well, and both offer a lot of versatility.
Strut10
Definitely 30-06 over the 30/30........but a .300 Mag. before either of those.
drkillemquick
30-06!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Jeramie
Dont tote the 30/30. Look for a .30-06, .308, .270 (at the smallest), .270wsm, .280, etc. Rifles are definately out there in your price range.

Jeramie
I agree with John's 336 idea but get the .450 big bore:D Or you could machine some 15" bar, rifle it, use a pillowcase for a patch, and just shoot him with a bolling ball..... :D
yooperkenny
I've killed black bear with my 30-30. It's an entirely adequate caliber assuming your shot is under 100 yards. A bear is typically not going to run 100 yards after it's hit like a deer can. And this thread would not be complete without someone stating that bullet selection and shot placement are as important as the caliber of the firearm. Good Luck! There's hope fer a spot in the OTPG (although, I must admit, not much) for you yet.
