Turkeygirl
Made you look, lol:p Ok, on a serious note, what kind of butterfly is this? It was flying around the yard this morning, I ran in and grabbed my camera and ran back out and it was still there thankfully. I believe isn't it a Swallowtail species? I figured I'd post it for you to look up..being you're a teacher and all:D Sure is pretty, I love the colors:)

wtnhunt
Chris is without a doubt quite knowledgeable on entomology, botany, and ornithology. Even if he is not sure, he will figure it out.
buckee
It looks like a White Admiral butterfly. They do come in different shades.
muggs
hmmm...not sure that's the same butterfly as the one above Buckee. It's really close, but it looks like the Admiral has a lot more orange on it.

muggs
The Tominator will know Oh he'll know the genus, the species (the proper Latin spellilng), how long it's in it's cocoon prior to metamorphisis, it's mating habits, it's kid's names, it's ATM PIN #. All that.
Turkeygirl
LMBO!!! I dunno...they do look similar but wings look a little bit different...oh well I'm still leaning with a type of Swallowtail...guess we'll find out the verdict when Judge Chris steps in... Here's a bigger picture:
Buckslayer
Guys (and girl),I'm no Tominator be any stretch of the imagination, thankfully , but I am 99.6% sure they are both white admirals in those pics. Slight variations of the same species are very common, for example Tominator is balding and I have a full head of hair.

All that. I'd have to agree, that's a white admiral. I'm too far south for them. I've never seen one to be honest, had to look that one up. Muggs, my brother, moths spin cocoons, butterflies make a chrysalis--get it right if you want to play with the big dogs. . And, for your added information, the white admiral's latin name is Basilarchia arthemis, although some still refer to its Old world name Lemenitis. This particular butterfly's PIN # is 5992. Great picture Ruth, you should start submitting your pics to Audubon.

stevebeilgard
tg's picture is of a female, and buckee's is of a male. and, a white admiral it is. way to go, steve. now, the above was, and is, total b.s., as i don't have a clue at all. but it sure did look good.... lol

Steve, that actually happens in the butterfly world, and as Buckslayer added, you can have two butterflies of the same species can look very different. A lot of trained entomologists can't tell certain sulphurs apart without doing DNA tests on them. Buckslayer was wrong about the balding part though. Me? Nahhhh, I'm secure with my non-baldness. Maybe it is he who is going bald, and he needs to project his feelings of inadequacy onto a non-balding dude. After a haircut, he used his mirror to show me the back of my head. I made a smart remark about my bald spot. He told me something that I will never forget. I don't know why but it was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of variation in human appearance. I should have just mentioned you have gray hair and I have black hair. Would have made things so much easier! :D Yeah, but you'd be wrong again. I have maybe 10 gray hairs. Baldness and gray hair just don't run in my family. Here, I'll make it easy on you--pick on my pot belly, I don't think you have one of those. Or, ask Tom (Ohiobucks) for Tominator fodder, he's never at a loss for a good Tominator beat down. Buckslayer
I was still just joking with the gray hair. I hate my dry sarcastic sense of humor.
