Guest Andrea
I wanna start catching stripers. In the river. I need all the info I can get. What bait? What method? What time? I checked out a site and a lot of guys do it at night with live shad. But shad are hard to come by around here. And once you catch them, they die almost immediately, whether you have a livewell or not. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks!!!! Texan_Til_I_Die
Around here, they'll also hit other types of live bait like large shiners or small perch. Big saltwater type swimbaits will also work, along with large topwaters like a Zara Spook or a big pencil popper.
Guest Andrea
The only thing that bites the shiners and small bream are gar and catfish around here. Unless you are fishing with a huge bobber and I believe that's illegal to do with bass. Are you fishing for them on top water or weighted? In the main channel or eddy's? Texan_Til_I_Die
Our stripers are mostly landlocked, so we're fishing lakes. There are a few fish that make it through the dams into the rivers below, and I believe those tend to congregate in the larger pools. LOL! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Striper+Fishing Good luck! I always catch them by accident in this one lake, unless I see them schooling! Mountaineer
In the lakes around here, we do best with poppers and plugs for the Stripers. A Creek Chub "Striper Strike" is the popper we use, and a Cotton Cordell "Red Fin" is the plug we use. Make sure you get something with some size to it, and if possible use a baitcaster. Stripers get BIG and they fight like no other. I love the sound of those monsters popping the water at night to feed on shad, it sounds like a .22 going off! Oh and if you do happen to hear or see one bust the top to feed on shad, cast in that area as quickly as you can and more than likely one will bust at your lure. JimT
I have only fished the ocean for them. I would think large jerk baits or anything that makes alot of action on the water would work. I know they make big Jitterbugs and such for them. You could try big shiners or whatever using a bullett weight and bead also. What I mean by this is to have a bead just above the swivel and a weight that the line can slip thru beyond the bead. The bead will help protect the knot. Know what I mean???
