Tominator
I'm putting in a concrete sidewalk 74 feet long, 4 feet wide. How many yards of concrete will that take? What's a reasonable price for that? I've got two estimates so far. One guy says $2750 for the whole job, another guy says $4 a sq. ft. minimum 4 yards of concrete. That's a pretty big difference if my math is correct.
beagleboy
I calculated it and you need approx 3.9 yds of concrete at 4 in thick. Frank
Jeramie
3.65cu yards (using an online Concrete Calculator) Its running about $70 plus a yard here....
007hunter
Unless you know how thick you need the concrete its hard to say how much you will need. At 4" you'll need 3.9 yds. At 6" you'll need 5.5 yds. As for price, sounds high but it depends once again on what he has to do. If he has to rip out the old sidewalk then I'd say he's in the ballpark but is high. stevebeilgard
i have to buy a couple hundred yards a month, at 112 a yard. ouch. but, in august, i'll be putting in a house in alaska where just the mud runs 232 a yard. (sorry, my eyes tear up every time i say that... lol)
mike
hey chris. concrete fills about 81 sq ft at 4 inches thick. just to buy the cement its about 85 a yard here. labor and mud is about 3.00 to 3.25 right now. thats with no removal. hope this helps. to bad your not closer i work for deer steaks and beer!! lol
lil hunter
how do they sell concrete by the square foot? Tell them you only need 48" x 4" worth of concrete, but you need it 74 feet deep. If they are selling by the square foot, you'd be paying for less than 2 square feet.
wtnhunt
That is a huge difference Chris, and the first guy is way overpriced in my opinion. If it were me, I would pour it myself, did my garage. A walk that size would not be that bad, but the second guys price $1184 if I figured right sounds a lot better than your first quote, and sounds like the concrete needed should be close to his minimum. I say get more bids! An old rule of thumb in the Construction business is: Get three bids. Take the highest bid, and the lowest, and throw them away. That will save you a lot of grief. c_lou
I had our driveway done a couple of years ago. Total for the job was $2400. That was 7 yards of concrete and the guy dug out our old rock driveway. 1st guys sounds pretty overpriced. I would check around.
Ohiobucks
I'll get you the name of the guy that did our walkway, maybe you'd like to give him a call for a price check. You know how long ours is, it was right at $1,180.00, including the 2 steps in front of the house.

hunter1963
I would call your local concrete producer and ask who they would recommend, they should know all the local contractors good and bad. who pays their bills and such.
VermontHunter
Hey Chris ... (length x width x thickness) ÷ 27 (27 is the number of cubic feet per yard) That is the formula for ordering concrete..;) Most concrete plants will calculate the yardage needed for ya if you ask them to... ;)
Tominator
Thanks guys. I knew I could count on you. Got a guy to come over last night, he quoted me $1050, and I have one more guy coming over in about an hour, so we'll see. I'm thinking the $2750 guy didn't want to do the job. Other than that knucklehead, they've all been in the $1,100 range. Looks like I'm going to need just under 4 yards of concrete.
