I'm putting in a concrete sidewalk 74 feet long, 4 feet wide. How many yards of concrete will that take?

What's a reasonable price for that? I've got two estimates so far. One guy says $2750 for the whole job, another guy says $4 a sq. ft. minimum 4 yards of concrete. That's a pretty big difference if my math is correct.

Unless you know how thick you need the concrete its hard to say how much you will need. At 4" you'll need 3.9 yds. At 6" you'll need 5.5 yds. As for price, sounds high but it depends once again on what he has to do. If he has to rip out the old sidewalk then I'd say he's in the ballpark but is high.

That is a huge difference Chris, and the first guy is way overpriced in my opinion. If it were me, I would pour it myself, did my garage. A walk that size would not be that bad, but the second guys price $1184 if I figured right sounds a lot better than your first quote, and sounds like the concrete needed should be close to his minimum.

how do they sell concrete by the square foot? Tell them you only need 48" x 4" worth of concrete, but you need it 74 feet deep. If they are selling by the square foot, you'd be paying for less than 2 square feet.

81 sq ft at 4" thick is what one cubic yd will cover:D

I say get more bids! An old rule of thumb in the Construction business is:

Get three bids. Take the highest bid, and the lowest, and throw them away.

That will save you a lot of grief.

Thanks guys. I knew I could count on you.

Got a guy to come over last night, he quoted me $1050, and I have one more guy coming over in about an hour, so we'll see.

I'm thinking the $2750 guy didn't want to do the job. Other than that knucklehead, they've all been in the $1,100 range.

Looks like I'm going to need just under 4 yards of concrete.;)
