RTF
Can anyone tell us what we caught. I have never seen a pikerel so big before. Fact is we don't have pike down in these parts or at least in this lake. http://field-n-water.com/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=64 http://field-n-water.com/forums/album_pic.php?pic_id=

Alisha
In my (and total disaster's) humble opinion(s)...... it's a pickerel! Here's the one I caught a couple months ago up in Nova Scotia!

Alisha
I remember reading once that the chain pickerel is the only one with the black strip under the eye

bulldawg
I've caught some northerns that had redish/orange fins on them. The markings look to be from a northern to me. But, the picture wasn't the best either. Dawg
RangerClay
I have enlarged this pic and I have to say that it is a huge pickerel. With that said, the next thing I would do is contact your regional DEC office and speak with the Fisheries Director. They may be interested to see your catch. Worse case scenario is that your son released a state record fish:rolleyes: Did you catch it in Otisco Lake?
Shaun_300
Those look like northerns to me! Here's some winter northerns we caught a couple winters ago. Those look like northerns you got there. Mind you the colour may be a little different depending on the water temp and clearness.

RangerClay
Did you get any measurements from that pickerel? What lake did you catch it in?

Bachflock
Pickerel. That first pict shows the black line under the eye. I've seen plenty of northern with reddish fins but that black line is the kicker.
RTF
Thanks for all the input guys and girls. We will never know how big the fish was, because it was released without measuring or weighing. It took a long time for the 11 year old to get it in. Talk about a drag burning out. The fish was caught in Otsego County near Cooperstown, NY.
