Last year i went deer hunting with my grandpa and we went to sit where we noirmally do and we caught the flags of 2 deer right in front of where we were gona sit. About 15 min later they came back and i shot both of them one in the heart (that wasnt there when we gutted it) through an opening about the size of a football and the other in the artery in the hind leg. When we got done guttin them we realized that they were brothers and they had nubbs. I dont know weather i shud have taken them or not cuz my grandpa told me to shoot them. Mind this was at aroud 630 when we walked in and about 645-700 when i shot them. and shootin time is aroud 640.

You have to do what is right for you, but to answer your question I personally would have passed them up, maybe let your grandfather shoot the deer. Too many times I have seen young deer come through first or early, and later seen good deer. Like Gary though, I would take advantage of any time you can with your grandfather, enjoy it.

I would have passed on these deer. I tell myself I'm not going to shoot any buck under 140". That way I'm sure I won't be killing any younger age class bucks and they will be able to get to the quality I want hanging on my wall. I get my meat from all does I kill in a year, so I try to be very selective on what bucks I take.

However, if you wanted to take those deer off your own property then I would say, great shootin!! I don't like to try and tell people how they should hunt their deer. You kill what you want and I'll do the same. Killing a couple of bucks with your Grandpa is priceless. You've got some great memories there, and a little meat in the freezer to go along with them. Good luck this next season. Why don't you let your Grandpa shoot one of those deer this year :)

Do what you want to do when it comes to that. But I would have passed them up and waited on somthing else or just not taken anything. Your already there enjoying the outdoors with your Grandpa so why not wait to see what happens. I love spending time in the woods with my Grandpa take advantage of it like they said. Not sure if we will get to go this year.

What I would choose to do is really irrelevant. You do what you want to get the most out of your hunting experience whether you're hunting by yourself or with your grandfather. Sounds to me like that hunt was special for both of you that day. Just maybe by killing those 2 deer you made it something a little more special for your grandfather.

To answer your question, I'm very picky in the deer I choose to kill so I would have passed them up. However, I don't want to or feel like it's right to impose my personal standards for killing deer on anyone else. ;)

I absolutely agree.

I would have passed em up, but I'm an older guy, who's been there, done that. Now it's your turn. :D

Enjoy your time with your Grandfather. That's way more important right now, than anything else.

I like to have some type of plan layed out before I ever hit the field. Am I after nothing but a trophy buck today, or do I want to shoot the first legal deer I see? Am I looking for a doe to help balance my ratio, or perhaps I'm trying to find that 3.5 year old buck that doesn't show much potential for growing impressive antlers when he gets older? Bottom line is that by having a plan and sticking to it, I can eliminate any doubts I might have about whether or not to shoot some particular deer.

First off I'm wondering about your second post, like you took offense at what needtohunt said and I didn't read it that way at all. Second, the 1st one in the heart sounds great and put some meat in the freezer, outstanding, but hitting the 2nd one in the hind leg sounds like you should have let it go due to a poor shot opportunity.

If you and your grandpa are happy with your harvest then that is all that matters. I try not to shoot nub bucks, but sometimes it happens. I will take a yearling doe though, no questions asked. I hunt mostly to put meat in the freezer and spend time with my Dad, my kids, and the outdoors. The only person that can decide which animal to harvest is you. Best of luck in the upcoming season.

Hey man, I'll say this, a lot of people choose to hunt horns and others hunt meat, it is all up to you on which deer to shoot or not. I agree with the guys, any time in the outdoors with your gramps is great, I for one hunt meat, it tastes better than horns! LOL. But mind you this, if the oppprtunity ever presents itself and a monster buck steps out, he'll be takin a dirt nap!!

Enjoy hunting with your grampa and if he said shoot, shoot and don't give it another thought. When you're hunting on your own, make decisions that you feel are correct for your situation.

I try wait and only shoot mature does to keep from getting a nubbin by mistake. ;)

You have to hunt the way u think is best and when i was just starting out I shot a couple of smaller bucks but after a wile I changed my hunting critera to shoot only larger more mature bucks....I try to take bucks of a 3.5 year age or older...and does i only shoot when they come out in a group and i look for the two biggest and pick one.
