SuperMn106
My brother, his mom and I made it out on the Ohio River for some catfishing saturday morning. It was a great time. We caught somewhere between 12-15 catfish, most channel cats and a flathead. The biggest cat was an 8 lb (estimating) channel cat that I caught. I have a great story on how I caught the big one though. I had two poles in the water and both were getting bites so i had one in each hand. I was trying to figure out which one I wanted to try and set the hook on when the pole in my right hand started to bend. I reared back and set the hook. If no one has set the hook on a catfish, the best i can describe it is, it feels like hitting a brick wall, your pole just stops. When i set the hook, the pole flew out of my hands, i still had the pole in my left hand also. When the pole flew out of my hand it came back down and the reel hit me on top of the head . I still dont have a clue on how it ended back in my hand. Somehow i got it back and the fish was still on so i handed the other pole to my brother and brought the fish in.When we got him in there was high fives all around the boat. I wish we would have had a video camera because we laughed all day long about that one. my 8lb cat. The tub of catfish. My brother and I with our stringer Hope you enjoy the pics. rad_112176
Nice cats! One of those is a blue I think, isn't it? ( In the tub) BTW...nice shot of the dog. LMBO:D:D:D They were all channels except for the one small flathead that we caught. It was a great time with my brother and mother. I have been trying to get them down to fish for a long time. The river is very low and the fishing wasn't really that great compared to how we usually do, but being able to take my mother and brother was priceless. Thanks for coming down this weekend little bro. Hopefully you get to come down for memorial weekend and we will go to Souther IL and have some fun. I am sure we can catch many more there. lil hunter
did you eat them? I've always heard you shouldn't eat fish out of the ohio, cuz it's so polluted. I've still done it once or twice, but you just got to remember, we are downstream from Louisville.lol. Congrats on the fish though, looks like you all had a nice trip. rad_112176
Yes we eat them. We wouldn't keep anything we wouldn't eat. I have heard story after story of why you shouldn't eat the fish. They have changed the story many times on the amount of fish you should eat from the ohio. We have fished the Ohio for many years and i would like to say that it is the cleanest it has been in years. I think the conservation has been doing a good job on protecting the river and stopping alot of the polution that used to be going into the river. And the other good thing is that this 3rd arm that has grown recently is coming in very usefull. LOL
lil hunter
I see, i've never fished the ohio much except for the occasional bass trip, when we don't have the time or gas money to go down to kentucky. Do you ever do any fishing on the wabash? I've always heard of people catfishing on it, but i've never done it. 99% of my fishing is for bass, or crappie. rad_112176
i have never fished on the wabash, but i do know a few people that do. I drive over it on a regular basis and think about trying it out. It looks like it would be a good river if you catch it at the right stage. It's hard to try new areas when we catch so many on the Ohio. On our usual trips we will catch between 10 to 15 fish per person on a morning of fishing. Get you some chicken liver and some #2 bait holder hooks and try it out. Look for your spots with good current and even better if you find a location where another creek or river ties into it. Let me know how you do if you go.
