Now its the UN's turn to bash America

The Bush administration yesterday pledged $15 million to Asian nations hit by a tsunami that has killed more than 22,500 people, although the United Nations' humanitarian-aid chief called the donation "stingy."

"The United States, at the president's direction, will be a leading partner in one of the most significant relief, rescue and recovery challenges that the world has ever known," said White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy.

But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

"It is beyond me why we are so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."

"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."

HOW DARE some pinheaded UN bureaucrat from Norway tell ME that I'm being stingy and that I SHOULD PAY MORE TAXES??? If that's not the height of arrogance and condecension, then I don't know what is. Its things like this, combined with the huge "oil for food" scandal that is rapidly moving the UN from the catagory of "USELESS AND INEFFECTIVE" into the catagory of "A BAD THING".

Re: Now its the UN\'s turn to bash America

I thought you were suppose to say something like "Thank You" when someone gives you $15 million dollars (and I thought I heard on the news that it is now $35 million) If the UN wants more money to be given, then they can dig in their pockets to come up with some. Plus I thought our economy was in the toilet, and not the growing world economy mentioned....and there is this little thing we have going in Iraq that is costing some money....but I guess they aren't looking at that. The UN thinks that Americans, who are already taxed into the poor house, would be happy to pay more in taxes???? I am not saying that I don't want to see more help sent to these people, but I think if Americans want more of their own money to go to this tragedy, then they know how to write a check to the Red Cross!

BTW - How much has Norway donated?

MAybe we should just pull the money we send them????

[/ QUOTE ]

Could not agree more. Better yet, maybe we should start collecting on all of the moneys that we have given to others for relief and aid over the years. Our national debt would be overcome really quick.

What a totally unappreciative bunch of fools.

Re: Now its the UN\'s turn to bash America

I'm not bothered by what that moron said--it's just more ammunition for those who want the US to say "hasta la vista" to the U.N.

However, I was VERY upset that the left is already politicizing this--saying that if we didn't go to war in Iraq that we'd have more resources to help the people in Asia. That's ridiculous.

We will likely give the most as a nation because Americans are the MOST generous people in the world. I don't believe involuntary donations (increased taxes) would make a difference--it would cut back on the good people of the U.S. donating on their own.

Since the left is politicizing this, why don't George Soros, Michael Moore, Bon Jovi, the Dixie Chicks, and all of these other "wonderful" rich people donate everything they can?

We're stingy? And the money we do send is going to help an area of the world that is a majority of Muslims, who have sworn to destroy us imbecils. We helped save Muslims from genocide in the Balkans and they still want to destroy us.

And France has, at this point, only pledged $136,000. Why isn't the UN riding their stingy ***es?

Re: Now its the UN\'s turn to bash America

Just something terribly wrong with the entire worlds perspective of the United States. We dump money into other countries where we are hated when we could spend it right here at home to help our own and when we send what help we can they cry it is not enough.

Think those anti-Americans like Moore who are so quick to speak out against and bash our leaders really make matters worse when it comes to the perception of our country as a whole. JMHO.

Really tired of hearing how much we are hated in places where we pour so much of our money into. Is absolutely disgusting.

Kofi Annan needs to get the **** out of the U.S. now

[/ QUOTE ]

Was kind of wondering how Anan and his son might try to get involved in exploiting this situation. Really do not think it is the place of the American people and our country to support the world. Great Britain has given the most for relief in this, think it was like $95 million where we gave $35 million.

If it were me and countries were giving, I would think a bit of thanks would be in order rather than criticisms. Really think Anan being in the position he is in needs to make a statement thanking those who have given and letting the world now how generous these countries are to give, but I am not going to hold my breath on that one.

What other countries are not thinking about is how we have had our own terrible disasters to deal with this year alone costing an incredible sum of money. Heard a number on what the hurricane relief was costing our government last night and it was a huge number. I may be wrong, but would seriously doubt there has been any countries pitching in to give us financial support there even remotely comparable to what we give to others.

Screw the UN! We should have got out of there a long time ago.

Just my feelings but as long as we have Vets living out of cardboard boxs and homeless folks on our streets here in the good old US of A there should not be ten cents sent anywhere else. Lets take care of our own first for a change.

And yes I am a Vet, Vietnam.

It seems every country we have tried to help in the past has turned around and bit us in the butt the first chance they got....am I sour your **** right I am! mad.gif

How about Canada? No money left over after socialist health care?

[/ QUOTE ]

On Wednesday, the defence minister raised Canadian assistance to the tsunami-hit nations from $4 million to $40 million and dispatched 25 tonnes of medical and food relief to Sri Lanka. Another plane with similar relief is bound for Indonesia.

Various provincial governments also chipped in, with British Columbia donating $8 million, Ontario $5 million, Alberta $5 million, and Nova Scotia and Manitoba $100,000 each. The Canadian Red Cross also received millions in donations.

I am a Bush guy through and through. But, one thing that really ticks me off is that he hasn't walked into the UN during session and given the whole place the finger. mad.gif

Somebody name me ONE THING the UN has ever done to warrant the US pumping the kind of money into it that we do...............and taking the s*** from them that we do????

Re: Now its the UN\'s turn to bash America

I'm with ya Strut on the finger idea!

To date - here are the pledges for help

Japan - $500 million, including 3 Navy vessels sent to Thailand

The United States - $350 million -- so far. US aid will undoubtedly exceed one billion dollars. This US aid includes an entire carrier battle group and an amphibious battle group sent to the region

Canada - $67 million

China $63 million

Great Britain - $29 million

Australia - $27 million

Saudi Arabia - $10 million (why only 10?)

South Korea - $2 million

Czech Republic - $446,000

Note: How many countries can you list that HAVEN’T pledged an help? Where is France, Germany, Iran, or North Korea on this list?

Kofi is working hard to try and clear the tarnished name of the “United Nations” especially after the “Oil-for-food” scandal. And now Kofi is angered that Bush has announced the formation of a coalition to spearhead relief efforts for the tsunami victims. To heck with the victims, we can’t miss an opportunity to look good!

Mark my words, fund donated through the U.N. will be mishandled and in a few years we’ll find out that millions of dollars went to line the pockets of U.N. officials and not to the victims of this diasaster.

I wouldn't trust my donation with them either.

Another thing that bothered me, listening to the news the other night, was the fact that they were listing charitable organization that you could trust to donate to. Only the secular organizations were mentioned and not one Christian organization was mentioned.

That ticks me off, because there are some really good Christain organizations who have been doing so much, for so many for years now and are very reputable. World Vision for one, is a very good reputable organization. mad.gif

Re: Now its the UN\'s turn to bash America

Honestly it is really pretty sad that there are not too many organizations that can be really trusted not to take advantage of or exploit this situation.

I was kind of surprised yesterday at the announcement that Clinton and Bush Sr. are working together to aid in the efforts.
