Optima and Optima Pro?

Recommended Posts

Im picking up a new ML'er this year. We only have 1-week of season so I honestly dont need the newest, latest, greatest. You can hunt Rifle with a ML too so I guess you could expand it if you wanted.

Anyway, I thought about buying a CVA Optima but now that they have the Optima pro out im curious. I can get the Optima for roughly $279 (the one I want). Or I can order an optima pro off of Gunbroker for just over $400 with a rifle barrel included. I could get a .270, or .30-06 barrel! That would be pretty cool.

Anyway, does anyone know if that is the main difference in the two? If it is, there isnt much of a reason to lean that way but I cant help but be curious. I think the ML'er barrels have the same twist rate, length, etc (I THINK) but im not 100% sure. So what information does everyone have?

Dont know the answer to your question, have no experience with the optima or optima pro, but you have me curious now.

Yeah, that sounds like a pretty good deal Jeramie, and that would probably be the way I would go, getting more for your money that way seemingly. Let us know what you get and how it works out for you.

That looks like a good deal with the extra rifle barrel. My Encore muzzle loader with a 25-06 extra barrel, has to be close to $700, and that doesn't include a laminated stock I bought,

and 2 Nikon scopes on top. WOW, I guess I have never added

how much I have in it  That's scary LOL. I would buy it if I was you , or buy mine, and I will buy it LOL.

This thread got me to looking at the barrels for encores at midway yesterday. Looks like average price for barrels is around $250 for a blued rifle barrel. They do carry the optima pro ml, but never could find any rifle barrels for them in their catalog. Price on the .50 blued ml optima pro there at midway is $249, optima pro 12 gauge shotgun is $399.

So you are getting the extra barrel basically for $150, sounds like a good deal to me if that is the gun you want.

I have the optima in 50 cal. but it would be nice to have the pro with the 270 barrel, they look kinda like the encore, which i can't afford.

The most noticable difference between the two is that the Pro has a longer barrel. The Optima is 26" and the Pro has a 29". If I was hunting hardwoods with 100 yards being my maximum range, I would get the Optima in a .50 cal. However if I planned to shoot farther, maybe out in open plains, I would get the Pro in .45 cal. for longer flat shooting.

You got a link to where you are seeing this deal over at gunbroker Jeramie? Not finding any combo deals like you said listed over there. Matter of fact, not seeing any barrels for the optima pro either just listings for ml'ers and one shotgun.

Guess the biggest downside I see to the optima pro is the extended barrel lengths, 29 inches is a lot of barrel to use in brushy areas where I typically ml hunt.

Looking at the cva site Jeramie, that looks like a pretty good deal. Here is a link to their suggested retails on combos http://www.cva.com/products/rifle_optelite_center_combos.htm .

Think if it were me, I would be more interested in the compact line with the 24 inch barrels. Hunting the hardwood river bottoms here, I like a compact gun, the standard black diamond has been great.

To be honest of you have a good rifle already I would spend my money on an Omega, I have the Optima and the Pro although both are nice guns the TC line shoots far better than both. I know you say your season is not that long neither is mine but I would rather spend a little more on a ML I know will shoot long and true if that monster steps out than not.

Buy an omega!! Best ml I have ever had. I also like my encore. Even if your season is short you don't want to take the chance on missing the big one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that an Ohio buck? Someone told me that buck was from Sunbury, it grew up feeding on a sweet corn patch by some Obsessive compulsive Teachers house. In fact ive heard there are monster bucks all over up there. Pretty easy picking only some guy named Chris misses those bruits. If you need more details on the story, just ask Tom. Im sure he can fill you in. :D

Btw, if Kevin doesn't see this ill fetch him.... :D

Go with the PRO! I've shot the .50 cal, .270, and the .30-06 in two different styles of stocks for the PRO. I enjoyed the "thumb-hole" version the best!

Although the TC Encore recoil system is better, I don't think that the extra $300 is worth spending on that gun. The trigger is especially fragile and would be a shame to call off a hunt because of it breaking!

I really dont have the need to spend extra on something like the Encore. I know they are a very popular gun but I wont pay the extra (especially considering I wont buy a slew of barrels for one).

Im definitely going to consider what you've said. Thanks....
