RTF
Well ya live in the right area for sure. Now is the time to get out and scout. You will need to get a duck stamp from the post office this summer to hunt ducks. It's $15.00 for one and everyone must have one. Also you will need to register for a HIP # too. Your DNR will give you more information on waterfowl hunting in your area then I can. Oh and BTW I highly reccomend you get a copy of Realtree's 2007 duck hunting video and watch it. lil hunter
My advice for you, find a local chapter of ducks unlimited, deltra waterfowl, or waterfowl usa (or maybe another waterfowl organization if you have one nearby) and become an active member in that. I did this recently, and have now met at least 3 other guys who I will be sharing a blind with this fall. I have always liked waterfowl hunting, but never really had anyone to go with, because my dad doesn't seem to like it too much. We have meetings once a month, to discuss banquets, and other projects. Something like that could be just the ticket for someone like you looking for some help getting started.
Tominator
Watch the papers. Some good blinds are lotteried every year for Alum Creek. A lot of guys go up to Delaware state park, but that place is a zoo most times, but there are ducks up there. Deer creek is another nice place. Hendrens might let you hunt geese as soon as the crops come out. If you're really interested, you could hit the Scioto and Olentangy properties and knock on doors of local farmers. We used to hunt a stretch of the Scioto that produced a fair amount of woodies and mallards. HIP is done automatically when you buy your license. You will need a federal and state stamp. Federal stamp, like RTF said, is at the post office, and state stamp is wherever you get your license. Good luck.
double_drop
Join a waterfowl website and meet some people from your state in your area. Most guys will let you hunt with them as long as you follow their rules and are polite.
quackmaster4
I'm surprised that nobody else has mentioned the down sides. Lots of early mornings, strange looks from others in coffee shops at 3:30 AM, strange looks from women in your own kitchen at 3:00 AM, sitting in weather the other hunters go home in (or don't even go out at all), all the scouting, dealing with the fact that you are going to be ABSOLUTELY addicted for the rest of your life, and the second job to afford all the stuff you are gonna NEED. Oh yeah, and loving every minute of it! GOOD LUCK!! Don't forget to join DU, Delta, or both. If you have a local chapter, join and help out.
