Buckslayer
So last night I am fishing part of the little juniata river here in central PA with my cousin. We are beneath a 30 foot high railroad trestle, fishing, minding our business when we both catch movement in the color of brown to our right. Minutes before a train had come through, and apparently hit a small buck on the trestle above, paralyzing it. The train passes and slowly the buck crawls to the edge of the bridge and well, jumps or falls the 30 feet, landing on the rocks a mere 15 feet from me. I didn't jump I just looked at Dan and said, "did that really just fall off the bridge?"... he replies yes it sure did. Hmm. Then the creature picks up its head. GREAT... just wonderful. Fishing trip now ruined. I observe that the deer can only pick up its neck and move its front legs. Thinking that it will starve down there next to the bridge before anything finds it... I decide there is only one humane thing to do. Problem is I have no gun. Next safest way to kill a deer that is very much alive, I determine, is a 50lb basketball sized rock from the streambed. So I've got the adrenaline going and give this deer a chance to calm down, slowly approach with the very heavy rock, and end things very swiftly. I get the twinge in my throat as I wait for the twitching to stop (breathing and heartbeat ended immediately) to make sure it is dead. I don't think I'll ever see or experience this again... and I'd rather just stick to arrows and bullets when killing deer -- but at least I did the right thing. Story over... ya know you can't make somehting that insane up...

Guest Andrea
How sad. I couldn't have done it. Woulda had to call someone else to come do it. I'm sure it wasn't easy, but good thing you did it.

OJR
That was the right thing to do! One of the main reasons I carry a pistol with me just about all the time, is so if I come across something like that, I can put them down in a hurry! I'd say so I don't have a photo with the deer [and weapon] to post like buckee had ... though in my case it is best no photos were taken... not the most regal image of that buck... It was an easy decision as everyone has agreed, it was the action that messed with my mind the rest of the night. Yeah PETA would not be pleased with me now... although technically I did the ethical thing at the time.
bobw
. it took a lot of guts to do that how about the meat...

Bowtech_archer07
It is good to hear that you did the right thing... and you're probably right.. PETA wouldn't be too happy, but you definitely did the ethical thing. Must have been really hard to do though.
Buckslayer
it took a lot of guts to do that how about the meat... His back end was pretty hammered, but the rest might have been ok. Problem was that I was 1.5 miles from the truck, had no knife, it was 85 degrees, and the climb down to the stream was very steep. After he expired I really didn't feel too proud or prepared to start dressing him out or get the appropriate tags to take him or whatever so it was best I just left. I had a weird mood and just said to Dan, let's go home. I had done my part, nature will do the rest.
