Stinger-Hunter
I went bowhunting for the last time on Monday and had a little excitement with a couple of does. After leaving the field around 9:30 I returned at 11:15 to find two does eating in a cut beanfield. I circled around them to get to my planned location where I left my bow and as soon as I got there, a doe snorted at me. I froze and tried to locate her. I blew back at her every time she blew. This went on for about 5 minutes. She calmed down and meanered around but I lost sight of her. She was about 60-70 yards away. after 5 minutes of trying to see where she went, I assumed that she trotted off. She didn't I stood up and began slowly walking toward where whe was and after about 25 yards she blew again. I repeatedly blew back at her, but couldn't see her. finally I located her and moved to my left to get a shot, if possible. She was still too far and behind downed tree branches and many saplings. This continued for another 5 minutes blowing back and forth and I bleeted with "The Can" a few times. After a while I finally became visible to her and she began to trot off with the other deer. I took off after her remembering a trick from a book I read which said if a deer begins to run - run after it because they won't be able to hear you running on top of the noise they are making themselves. Well, if worked cause I was within 40 yards when they stopped. But as soon as I stopped, they began trotting off again. I ran once again and had another shot but they trotted off again when I stopped. If I had a gun I could have easily shot one or both of them, but the ol' bow doesn't work that way. It was fairly exciting and ended my season with a little more knowledge and experience when dealing with slightly spooked deer. I'm sure that if it were a mature doe, she would have been off long before, but these seemed to be at the most 1 1/2 year olds and there wasn't a matue doe with them. the running thing works, I'll tell you that. I only wish I had a gun. LOL.

buckee
Re: End of season excitement LOL..I was trying to picture you running after a healthy deer too. Sounds like you had fun, and that's the main thing.
Tominator
Re: End of season excitement Great story. I've cut them off before by trying to predict where they'll run, but I've never run after them.
