whitetailtrax
Eastern Montana is a huge place! There is plenty of BLM land out there as well as privately owned block management areas. You need to start by getting ahold of BLM maps for the specific area you plan on hunting and also contact Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to get ahold of block management maps. Many of the block management areas require that you contact the land owner to get permissin ahead of time. FWP has a good website with the phone numbers and addresses of their various offices around the state to contact for the block management info. You will likely be doing spot and stalk hunting or perhaps some sitting as you wait for animals to move in the late evening or early morning. If you are hunting in October, that means you will be hunting the first week of season, which is crazy with all the people and the deer aren't into the rut yet so there's a couple strikes against you....but, you can often catch undisturbed deer off-guard that opening week too. I wish you all the best and remember to wear your hunter orange at all times in the field! Good luck!
G-Daddy
Check with MT FWP for the block management program. The other alternative is CMR - Charles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It's huge with lots of deer. Look them up on the web.
