Doc
Just got back from Gander Mountain where I bought the Johnny Stewart Prey-master. Man, it's just like Christmas. I didn't think you could get this ol' croak that excited anymore. I tried it out and it sounds better than my old Burnham Bros. caller that weighs a million pounds. This thing weighs nothing! Just plain old AA batteries too and not that huge nasty old rechargeable battery that is always flat every season. Me and my ol' .222 are going up on the hill tomorrow and call up some coyotes, foxes and stuff..........Well, at least I'm going to try. Y-Y-Y-E-E-E-HAH, here we go. Doc
Re: 1 happy camper! [ QUOTE ] Good luck doc keep us posted!! [/ QUOTE ] Ok..........so it's not as easy as it sounds I spent 5 hours up on the hill (7:30 am to 12:30). Good snow cover, and nearly no wind. Called in six different locations on about a 100 acre section of the hill. Called about 15 minutes (nonstop) at each location. I think my distance between calls was about a 1/4 mile (give or take). but no luck. There are coyote and fox tracks all over the place up there. I did cut a couple sets of tracks that were quite fresh, but still no luck. I was able to keep the wind in my face except for the 4th stand. the wind was swirling a bit in that location. Am I discouraged?.......Heck no! I'm already looking forward to trying it again. Unfortunately, the snow is gone, the wind is howling, and it's supposed to rain all day. So I think I may be out of business for a while. By the way, that brings up a question. If you encounter a calm drizzly or rainy day, does that affect how well they come in? Also, does any one see any glaring flaws in my procedure? Doc
sureshot
Re: 1 happy camper! I have had days that seem perfect and not a single responce yet the next a ugly day and come home with 5 ! Coyotes are hard to predict, I ahve found before a storm or rain they seem to callbetter or just after! Howloud did you have it on? I would not start out to loud, if they hear it really loud from 200 yards they might be gone, Plus I hardly ever use the electronic call unless windy were I can set it away from me and I leave it run continuos becouse I cannot shut it off,If I could I would only run it for a few minutes, shut off for a few and so on! I really find when its continuos osund they can really pinpoint exactly were the sound is coming from and bust you easier! good luck!! Doc
Re: 1 happy camper! Ok, I may have started out too loud. What I did was I would crank it pretty loud for about 1 minute, then I would adjust it down for the rest of the time. Could be that if they were too close to start with, that loud 1st minute may have spooked them. I have heard the squeals of a rabbit outside my bedroom window and they were pretty loud, but I may have been just a little too loud for that opening minute. I'll try it on the lower volume all the way through next time. I do have the ability to turn the caller off and on, and I really wasn't sure whether to call continuously or intermittantly. Actually the caller will stop automatically after about 1 or 2 minutes and you have to hit the button again if you want to continue, which I did throughout each calling session. I will try the intermittant calling next time. I had the speaker about 50 feet away from me, but I can get it even farther out than that. Maybe those changes will make for better results next time. I'm also getting a white set of coveralls for the snow hunting during the rest of the winter. My regular camo really didn't do a whole lot for concealment, since most everything in the woods was covered with snow. I'm also going to have to get more places to call so that the area doesn't get over-called. I have a few places in mind. The area that I'm hunting now is state land, and one thing I noticed was that down low in the valley there were a lot of people tracks from small game hunters or hikers. This is the first time I've ever seen that before. Usually the state land is deserted during the winter. Hopefully, that nonsense will slow down as the winter goes on. There was no one on top of the hill, so that was still pretty much undisturbed, and that's where I did most of my calling. I'll get it all ironed out sooner or later. The good news is that the foxes and coyotes are up there in good numbers and it's just a matter of time. Doc
Doc
Re: 1 happy camper! I'm pretty sure that I was calling too loud, now that I think about it. Right now, I am waiting for some more snow. I'm thinking that in the woods, those critters are going to be pretty hard to spot without the white background. We should have some snow in a couple of days, and then I'll give it another try, armed with all the suggestions I've gotten so far. It's probably a good idea to let some time go by before I try that area again anyway. Thanks for the info. Doc
