Feeder got demolished !

I have had my deer feeder in the woods for about a month now, was not able to hang a trail cam at the same time as it was a last minute decision when I decided to put it in.

I figured it would be empty by now so I got my cams ready filled the big bags with corn and headed in. When I crested the hill and saw the feeder I was happy and all looked good. As I got closer I could see the motor was now ripped off and in a million pieces. Some of you might have seen the pics I posted last year during the hunt of a bear I had around well I guess he is still there. He ripped that motor off and emptied the barrell of 450 pounds of corn.

I hung the cams anyway to see what comes by this week but will have to go in next weekend and replace the motor as I did not have one with me. Dont know what to do, I am going to hook up the zapper option on the new motor which zaps animals with 2000 volts of shock when they touch it hopefully if he comes back and gets zapped a few times he will leave it alone. If he still continues to come I dont know what to do, I hate to shoot him out of season BUT this is my best stand and it will entirely mess the season up also. Calling officials where I live is no use as one they dont care and two I am bringing feed into an area they live in.

Man it sure killed the day though to see everything smashed to bits !

#1 - Since when is poaching legal to protect your hunting area?

#2 - Why should officials respond, if you're feeding the bears in their own habitat ?

#3 - If your stand is in such a great area, then there is no need to bait...remove the bait or buy a bear tag come hunting season (if it's legal to bait bears, where you are)

I guess I better clarify what I left out of the original post, I by no means meant to poach the bear. I spoke to many of the residents in the area the day this happened to find out the bears this year have been a big problem, this is a cottage area with houses every few feet. The bears are on peoples porches, in their garages and around their kids. I was told they called the local wardens many times and got an answer of if you feel threatened you have to right to shoot them. Two have been shot in the last two weeks and the wardens would not even come out to see them.

All I meant was if I happen to be in there filling or checking my cameras and something does happen I would hate to shoot it out of season for no real reason like others have. I would NEVER poach or shoot an animal for the sake of doing it. I would much rather just see it go away on its own.

The only reason the bait is there is to provide the deer in the area extra nutrition during the antler growing faze as it is all hardwoods and not much around other than cedar and ferns.

I hate to say this, but you're up against a catch 22 situation here. In order to shoot a problem bear, legally is to catch it in the act on your porch, in your garage, or in your yard harassing the kids, etc.

To lay in wait for a bear, just any bear, that hasn't been identified as a problem bear, is considered hunting.

The key words that the game warden said there, are "If you feel threatened you have the right". That statement by the warden doesn't mean you have permission to go hunting bear in the area.

I think the laws are the same everywhere concerning situations like this. Be careful of your interpretation of what the warden actually said, or your going to find yourself facing poaching charges.

We have a lot of problem bears here too, but if you don't catch them in the act, then you can't just take it upon yourself to go hunting them out of season. ;)

Seems like he is still making excuses for being able to shoot the bear just to make his "spot" ok to hunt deer ... I guess whatever makes it ok in his mind ... still doesn't make it right ... seems like you go into the wild and have a problem with a bear you better have some scatches to prove it ... most bears want no part of humans ... plain and simple ... they are more curious then anything ... if it were me I think I might just find a different place to hunt or set my stand without a feeder that wouldnt attract the bear ... real simple ... leave the feeder empty for a while and that bear will move on ... the deer will still stay there ...

I've got a huge bear problem myself. They have not tore my feeder up yet.

I've got a 30 gallon feeder so I'm thinking about using my climber and putting a chain about 15 feet up in the air across 2 trees. Attach the pulley to the middle of the chain and hang my feeder. This should put it a few feet away from any tree and 10 foot off the ground. Does anyone see any problems with that setup?

You have to remember this about feeders, animals that visit them do not know that they are only for deer, they are animals that are hungry and found a tasty snack that spitted out onto the ground. Wild animals do as they please and do not know better and why should they? Its their woods and its hard to say what can be allowed to eat and what can't. You put a feeder in their habitat, expect the worse as well as the best that can happen.

I guess the simplest way to prevent damage to future feeders is to remove it and not use it. You can't limit what visits it and what can't.

Feeders are equal opportunity providers and don't know how to discriminate! :)

Interesting thread, and with that tone...in reference to someone "minding their own business"....was inappropriate, and if I am stepping on toes, well...so be it.....your original thread went to the assumption that you were going to break the law, or felt you may need to break the law due to damage from a bear.....if I did not read this right, then Ill read it again, and again...but BigMoss........if you re-read your original post, its in the gray area of breaking the law............and as far as the "pro-steve" comments you made...you need to work that out through pms.......I am being professional about this, and Scott is also a dear friend of mine, and I speak with him a great deal, ....and I dont think he would even appreciate the tone this post has set..............lets keep it clean, and inappropriate name calling toward forum members, or expressing on a "public" forum to "stay out of it" or "mind your own business" is wrong.............and I will deal with it if it continues. al
