waterfowler_gal
In Minnesota, we go through a lot of season changes and weather changes in the Spring. When or how early should you be scouting before your turkey hunt? I am so excited... even though we will not know if we get picked in the lottery yet but I would "assume" so... It seems that they move around a lot.... Any tips or suggestions ...

Strut_Buster
Re: How early should one start to scout? I really don't pattern untill late winter early spring. Right now they are all grouped together in winter paterns. Toms and jakes hang together along with the hens. This time of year i just glass and see what kinda birds i have. Patterns change throughout hte season.
borch
Re: How early should one start to scout? I'm always looking for turkeys. It's always good to find a few more places with turkeys to hunt. Plus looking for possible barriers that could cause a bird to hang up is a good way to make your spring more successful. As far as patterning birds I usually wait until a couple of weeks before my hunt. Bird movement changes so much as turkeys progress through their breeding cycle. waterfowler_gal
Re: How early should one start to scout? I applied for a southern Minnesota area where we farm 700 acres however the woods are only so large and big spaces in between each of them.. it seems they move continuely.. it drives me fricken nuts! I also applied in Big Stone/Ortonville area on the border of South Dakota and the woods there are endless..... So a lot to cover... I just don't want to waste my hunting week running around like a "turkey with my head cut off!" You know what I mean? lol...

Hillbilly
Re: How early should one start to scout? I love scouting, it gets me out of the house and into God's Country. I can empty my mind out when scouting and I can always get pumped for next season. Also good for exercise.
Swamphunter
Re: How early should one start to scout? In my part of the state the snow gets so deep it is hard to walk through the woods. I try to get in the woods as soon as the snow has melted because it is still muddy and trails show up better.
Strut10
Re: How early should one start to scout? [ QUOTE ] I usually wait until a couple of weeks before my hunt. [/ QUOTE ] Yep...............or even less. You can start now if you want. But all that will give you is an idea whether there are turkeys in your general area. Where you find birds now bears little or no similarity as to where you will find one to kill it the first morning. Right now, they are associated with food sources. It'll be a couple months before they start to vary from that, here in the North. So scout now to find if you have birds around. Then scout your behind off early mornings the week before season opens. maddhunter
Re: How early should one start to scout? Since I have to drive a ways to where I turkey hunt I usually start in on it heavy right after deer season is over. I take my son squirel hunting and I gather info that way. Just like everyone has allready said, if you can, the more time you spend scouting the better your chances will be.
