Jabes Pond-- dialup beware

Recommended Posts

Jabes Pond is a secluded pond hidden inside the Adirondack Mountains.. The only way to get to it is to hike in 2 miles. So on the first night we were there, four overnight trips were presented to us. We had to pick one to go on. All of the campers were divided into the four trips. The four trips were Benwood Mtn, Crane Mtn, Jabes Pond & Indian Lake. I picked Jabes Pond because it was a short ( but steep ) hike and we could fish.

So Monday after lunch, we left and took about a 40 min ride off camp grounds and then hiked up the trail. The trail was very steep and it was in the upper 90's. Needed to constantly be hydrated.

Anyway.. we got up to Jabes around 5:30 PM and set up camp. We were settled in by 6:30 ( tents up, fire started, etc.. ).

Here's a few pics of the pond itself:

Here is where our fire was and the view during the evening:

Here is what we had to sleep in.. We had to squeeze five guys into this what was supposed to be 8 person tent. We barely fit five. Three other guys had to sleep outside under a lean-to. The only two girls there had a 4 person tent to themselves and the two counselors had their own tent to themselves.

Here's all the food we had to work with between 12 people. The food definitely sucked the whole time we were there. We ended up only packing out a tub of peanut butter and some celery.

Here is a pic of a few of the campers using the water filter pump to fill up everyone's water bottles:

And then.. while we were getting ready to leave, this chipmunk came out of nowhere and tried getting into the backpack of another camper.. Turned out that this kid had the peanut butter inside his bag:

You can see the backpack in the left of this pic:

Chris.. it was indeed a pond. Ponds are spring fed and lakes have tributaries. That's the difference between the two. ;)

To be honest.. I didn't know that until I asked how the heck that place was called a pond.

Well there you go. I learned something today. I did not know that.

OK then, that's the biggest freakin' pond I've ever seen!
