Guest Kelby Wright
this might sound kinda foolish but is there any way that like a 40 yards by 40 yard food plot would help attract deer? if so what would you all suggest i plant? thanks
Guest Kelby Wright
this would serve more as a hunting plot that a feeding plot
dogdoc
it all depends on the number of deer but I've had smaller plots than that as hunting plots---and I see lots of deer use these small plots. I have had my best luck planting a mixture of wheat and Austrian winter peas on my small hunting plots. Fertilize heavy and you will be surprised how well the wheat will produce even with quite a bit of pressure. good luck todd
slughunter
I planted this plot last year in monster mix and at one point had 4 does crowded into it, and I barely hunted it so im sure there were more at one point. Its only about 10 yards by 7 yards. So I would say that a plot 40 yard by 40 yard would work out for you. Here is my mini-plot, you can see it was really small and yet deer loved it: -shane
Guest Kelby Wright
has anybody tried that noplow mix from whitetail institute? i could prolly get a plow to the plot but it would be tight and i dont have the money for the disk to go behind my atv
wtnhunt
An area 40 yards by 40 yards if I am not mistaken would be more than a 1/4 acre. Have had decent results from mini plots smaller than that here. Have no experience with the whitetail institutes no plow mix.
Tominator
William's right, that's right around a quarter acre, plenty big enough, especially if it's in the right spot. I planted No Plow on a plot that was worked up. It came up fine. I think the more time you put into prep work, the better off you'll be. FSU_Seminole
has anybody tried that noplow mix from whitetail institute? i could prolly get a plow to the plot but it would be tight and i dont have the money for the disk to go behind my atv I've tried it on several occassions & the deer just don't like the stuff where I plant it. I've had much better success with Evolved Habitat's products like "Shot Plot" & I tried some of their "Throw & Grow" last season. The deer enjoyed both sets of plants. Here is "throw & grow", you can pretty much get it anywhere online Bass Pro, Cabelas & I think they sell it at Wal Mart to. http://www.evolved.com/home/products/harvest/annuals/throwandgro.aspx
PotashRLS
See the reply I gave to "Plowing a Field" thread by Woodsman2230. Same things apply. Small plots like you are talking make great killing plots. Keep them secluded if possible and don't overhunt them. My brother and I have won our big doe contests 3 of the last 5 years with does from small plots planted with "Secret Spot". But taking short cuts with food plots will doom the plot. You get what put in!!!
