we have before by kids that live down the road from where the land was. there was snow on the ground so we just followed the tracks and it let to the road on the other side of the land then acouple days later my dads cousin found it a store close by that u can trade or sell them stuff and they sold the treestands to the owner and he got the video from the store and it was a kid who lived close to where we followed the tracks out to.

Forgive me if this question sounds dumb, but when you say "public" is that like a national forest or government owned land?

Reason for asking is here is TX stands left over night are not legal. The Corps of Engineers will take them down if found on Government land and Game Wardens will take them down if found on national forest land.

Not sure of the rules or laws in your state.

I have anothe rpost going on here about how my tagets and old stand were stolen out of my back yard. Well, that's one of the olther reasons that I was so frustrated with the whole situation. I've had stands up in Public Land, mostly State Forests, for minths at a time. I have never had an issue, and then I have one stolen from my back yard. Unbeleiveable!!

Anyway, my only reccomendation to you would be to use Tree Stable locks. You can get them at just about any Sproting Goods Store. I have even made some of my own with coated cables and master locks.

Also, if you are using steps or something other then a ladder, I reccomend taking the bottom few off. For example, on one of my setups, I use the Buck Steps by Summit. I have a set of six of them, and I usually take the botton two out with me. It's lightweight to carry in and easy to setup in the dark. Then, even if somone came acroos my stand, they would have to go back out and bring a ladder in just to get to it. Not to mention that everything is locked up.

Just my reccomendations. Good Luck!!

sorry for not being clear, it's state land here in ct, no government land. the law here says you can leave stands up all season, but cannot be permanetly attatched to the tree, for ex, with nails or any kind of hardware. you are also supposed to attatch your name and address the stand.

I have even had stands stolen on private land, so it is definately a good possibility on public land. Definately lock them up. This will keep an honest man honest. A thief will find a way if he wants too.

just because it has a lock on it doesnt mean that their not going to steal it.it just makes the chance of them stealing it slimmer but the stand that i said that got stolen the kid or kids had cutters and cut the cable or lock and my dad ended up finding the lock in the snow

just remember, although i dont agree with this, putting your stand up on public land makes it a public stand, chances are if you like the spot someone else does too...

In my mind, any stand left on public land (or private for that matter) only draws attention to that particular spot. I am aware that far too many people would rather have someone else do the scouting for them and have heard of people who walk through public land looking for spots/stands that others have picked out to hunt and then purposely hunt there. I personally use climbing stands and never leave them in the woods. Since not all trees are suitable for climbing stands, a clamp on stand that can be easily set up in the dark and can be removed to go home with you that night would be the only other option I would consider. Remember, anti-hunters abound and not all "hunters" are ethical.

we use to have a member that left notes attached to his stand he left on public ground.

The note said something along the lines of "you may use my stand but please do not destroy or steal it. Good luck and be safe."

Not sure how that worked out for him but that's what he did.

If it was me I would definitely lock it up, of course that will not stop someone but it may stop a few.
