HarvDog
I am considering a Remington 710 combo in 270 for a basic deer hunting rifle. I've read some pretty decent things about it so far but wanted to check with the pros on RT. I'm sure I would evidently want to upgrade the scope. I'm assuming I could swap out the stock at some point if I really wanted to...or I could just camo it. Regardless, anyone have any thoughts or experience with the model 710? wtnhunt
From what I have read on the 710 and all its problems and how it compares to the 700, think I would save up until I could afford it and get a model 700 and then later get a good scope. Jeramie
If you're looking at a Decent rifle I personally wouldn't buy a 710. Im a huge Remington fan (especially the 700's) but I am not a fan of the 710. If you're looking for a Cheap Rifle to get the job done look into the Stephens line. You can get them in just about any cal and even get them in Cammo stock for under $300 (typically). Great Rifles for the money. Im told from the guys in the know that they are basically a Savage with a different brand. Ive only seen them in ADL (kicks shells out the top only, no floor plate) but in reality, if you're looking for a great dependable, accurate Rifle for around $300 how can you complain? Great, great buy IMHO. Clickly Clicky here James..... wtnhunt
Yes, problems Harv. Pretty sure there have even been posts in here on recalls and other issues on the 710. Like Jeramie suggests if you are looking for a cheaper better rifle, consider something else besides the 710. The savage model 10 comes in some package gun deals, and in my opinion is good rifle. HarvDog
Ok...so basically I'm looking for my first bolt action rifle for deer hunting between $300-$400 with a somewhat decent scope. From this post and others, it sounds like I need to look at the Savage 10 (or 110?) or the Stevens 200. What about the the Remington 770? What other options/recommendations? johnf
You might consider the Mossberg 100ATR. You can get them for about $250 at a Wal-Mart that still sells guns then top it off with a Nikon Prostaff with good rings all for about $410. I've heard really good things about them from folks who own them. One guy was at the Wally world counter buying 3 of them for family after a year with a 270 and 30-06. wtnhunt
Wal mart had some synthetic stock 700 adl's clearanced here not long back Harv, making room for the new camo synthetic stock 700's. May be worth checking out any wal marts in your area that sell guns if there are any. They had a few clearanced rifles still left when I was in there the other day, but think those were other models. The savage model 10 is the rifle, the 110 is a package if I am not mistaken with the model 10 rifle with a 3-9X40 scope mounted. The scope will be cheap, but still the same model 10 barrel and action. The wifes model 10 was a package gun in .243. It came with a simmons scope, which was functional, but I replaced it with a nikon buckmasters scope for her. That little savage after a trigger job with the instruction of one of our members guidance here is quite a tack driver.
007hunter
Remember, before you buy, you get what you pay for!! Personally, I wouldn't buy the 710. Around here the price difference between the 710 and 700 is very little so I'd go with the 700 for sure. If you keep your eyes out you can find used Savage 110's for fairly cheap. I've picked up 2 of them in less than a year and paid less than $250 each after all was said and done. You just got to watch what you buy... HarvDog
So if I go with something that doesn't have a scope, what is a decent option that still keeps my within budget?
wtnhunt
Think if I were you I would check locally and find a model 700, but that is my choice. If that is too much for your budget, try a savage model 10. Bass Pro and some of the other big retailers will have these guns where you can physically see them. Pick them up and shoulder them yourself and see what feels right to you.
johnf
Wal-Mart here sells the Mossberg for $249. You can get a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40 for $150 or a 2-7x32 for $129 and have enough left over for some steel leupold rings all for just under $400 befor taxes. Jeramie
If you'll consider a used gun Im betting you can find a Remington 700 in ADL for around $400. The BDL model runs a little more. Other than that I would personally look at the Stevens. My second choice would be the Mossberg ATR. You can get into either of those guns for a very reasonable price. Pick up a scope that wont break the bank and you're set. One other option, if you dont mind single shots, is to look at an H&R. You can pick one up in .270 for just over $200. Very accurate and will serve you well.
