Guest Racksnbeards
I wass told this is a great youth caliber. I however know nothing about it. How'sit compare to the .243, I don't think he can handle the .243 yet. Any comments would be appreciated.
robk
Re: 7mm08 with the new low recoil ammo out you can get him shooting several calibers as well. the 7mm08 and the 308 and the 243 are all great for kids andwomenif your serious about getting hima gun take a look at he single shot such as the encore or h&r both are great single shots and the newengland arms rifles are much cheaper but good quality good luck rob k by the way i shoot the 308 in the encore and it is one sweet shooter which a good porting or muzzle brake can be applied as well good luck rob k
AJ
Re: 7mm08 The 7-08 is basically a .243 Win that has neen necked up to hold 7mm or .284" bullets. It will have more recoil than the .243 Win. If you don't hink he can handle the .243 Win, then the 7-08 is way too big. You can get a gun with a muzzlebrake to reduce the recoil, but it will be extremely loud. I would not allow a kid to shoot the gun (even in hunting conditions) without hearing protection. JimT
Re: 7mm08 If your looking for a gun for a kid I would go with the .243 or .260 Rem......For sure.

Slugger
Re: 7mm08 the 7-08 and the 243 are both necked down from the .308 they are all the same case with different bullet diameters. so they can hold the same powder charge and since the 243 shoots the lightest bullet it will have the least recoil of all three. then the 08 and then the 308. borch
Re: 7mm08 It's a great youth caliber. As far as recoil goes a lot has to do with the gun, it's weight and how it fits the shooter. Somewtimes a few ounces of weight can make all the difference, For instance my one very small petite dauighter shoots the 7mm-08 in a Rem Model 7 youth. Shootng it with the open sights it had significant recoil. But adding a scope, mounts, sling made all the difference in taning down the recoil. Do not under estimate fit. I feel it's the most important component in perceoved recoil. Personally I only like the ,243 in an expereince shooters hands. Not a lot of bullet weight there(90-105 gr.) to begin with. Any fragmentation and a messy tracking job is likely. With the 7mm-08 you can shoot bullets in the 120 - 150 gr. with marginally more recoil. I also persomally don't care much for muzzle brakes for new hunters. Many develop a flinch or fear more from the increase muzzle blast than the recoil. And to be honest I don't like it much either. Again just my experience and opinion based on it. Other great option would be the Rem. .260, .257 roberts. 6.5 Swede and Win .308 Borch

[/ QUOTE ] The .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7-08 Remington, .308 Winchester, and the .358 Winchester are all using the same casing. The only real difference is the neck diameter. Straight Shooter
Re: 7mm08 I guess I'm a man shooting a womans caliber. LOL I've hunted with a 7mm-.08 for years now. It's absolutely a great round for deer. If you know anyone who reloads, they can get the right pwoder in there and cut down on the recoil. I'm shooting hot loads and it still doesn't have alot of recoil. You can drop down to a 120 grain bullet and get a good shooting gun. Guest CBU93
Re: 7mm08 [ QUOTE ] 7mm-08 is the equal of the great old 7mm Mauser or 7x57 as they say in Europe. You could use it on the same game. I don't recommend it for elephants though requarless of WDM Bell's record. [/ QUOTE ] Ha!!!! Classic! johnf
Re: 7mm08 I would go with an NEF/H&R 243. If recoil is still a factor get a SVL recoil pad for it. I got one for my Benelli Nova, and it made slugs feel a little heavier than #6 shot. I think on a 243 recoil would be all but gone. As far as blood trails, I've never had a deer go more than 30 yard shooting a 243. Teach him good shot placement and ethical shooting and you won't have to worry about it.
