wtnhunt
Have killed several yotes over the years either deer hunting or shooting right from the back of the house. This morning was just my second time out to try calling yotes since I got my new AR. Have been trying to call yotes with no luck with my johnny stewart caller since I got the call, but that finally changed this morning. Got up, debated whether or not to even go, was pretty foggy and I figured it would be later on before I would be able to see the field well enough to even hunt it. Left the house and got setup, and called one sequence of pups in distress, about 4 or 5 minutes later set the caller to another sequence of pup distress calls along with a yellowhammer, and probably 15-20 seconds into the sequence I catch movement from the left corner of my eyes through the fog on the edge of the woods about 125 yards out. The yote was looking directly at where the speaker was in the tall grass and headed kind of angling that way around the brush pile, looked like he was going to loop around on the low side of the hill. When he started on the move I raised up my rifle got on him and took the safety off. Was hoping he would stop, but he stayed steady on the move and was headed kind of towards the brush pile and I was a little concerned he might go on in the pile, so I went on and squeezed off the shot while he was moving through the fog I am guessing at about 110 yards out when I shot. The yote flopped to the ground and got up and took off, thought he went into the brush pile, could not see him anymore through the scope. It all happened pretty quick, but was very cool to actually have a yote coming to the call for the first time. Was shooting the cheap ultramax 55 grain soft points, had planned to use the black hills ammo, but forgot and had the clip loaded with the ultramax ammo. Seems the ultramax ammo worked just fine though, I hit a little high and a little farther back than I was aiming, but the yote went about 10 yards from where I shot him, good enough for me:D. Heard a bunch of them really close, like just off our property in the bottom where I know deer bed in the willows, last night right after getting back from checking my cam over our soybean plot:(.
