Outdoor_Guy
I am considering a Savage .17 HMR with either a heavy barrel or a regular barrel. Is it worht the extra $60 for the heavy barrel, or not? Any help is appreciated.
LifeNRA
I am still thinking about one myself. If I do get one, it will be the heavier barrel. Having a thicker barrel will disperse heat better, during multiple shooting sessions. Allowing for better accuracy. Thicker barrels also help with recoil, but since the .17HMR has almost no recoil. It will not help here.
Guest Colorado Bob
I've got the heavy barrel. I got mine for shooting prairie dogs----I was thinking that on an afternoon shoot it would take the heat better. Seeing your from Ohio---I'm guessing groundhogs & plinking. So, if I would probably just get the regular barrel. CB
CrAzYCoYoTe
I agree the heavy barrel (on most larger calibers) does add a great deal of accuracy. I think its worth it if accuracy is what your looking fot. Then why wouldent you be. But the gun is accurate enough by itself.
spyderpancake
I can't spek for the regular barrel, but i know from experience that you will not be disappointed in the heavy barrel. It doesn't add too much weight to the gun, and you will never have to wonder how much better i could have shot...
dartonman
I am another fan of the heavy barrel.............I love mine.....if you go with the Savage, great accuracy.....but Ill warn you now....if you dont get the one with the accu trigger...you will cuss the gun with the standard trigger......mine is accurate as I can only imagine, I can cover 10 rounds, any bullet with a dime at 100 yards with it, but my trigger is not smooth.........I should of got the accu trigger..................have fun, they are a great gun to shoot............al
Outdoor_Guy
Thanks for your advice all. I went old school with the wood stock, but with the bull barrel and accu trigger. Now, any advice on the best cartridge to use?

too_pointer
My 93 has a bull barrel, and the accutrigger. The barrel does add some weight, and from what I hear, the standard barrel is fine for accuracy. I really like the trigger, it is great and you don't want the older trigger, it is not good at all. I also prefer the Hornady 17 grain bullet for accuracy. too_

spyderpancake
how does it shoot? I have never tried the 20gr, but all the 17gr shoot really well, and most shoot to the same point of impact-nice not to have to re-zero it when i try a new brand of ammo!
