deerhunter10
I have been seeing a few bear around my deer stand and was wondering if my 7mm-08 was enough to take down a big black bear. If so could it knock down a bear out to 100 yds. Any input is apprecitated.
Strut10
The 7-08 would make an "adequate" bear rifle. I would not rate it as a "great" bear rifle. But it could certainly get the job done. I would definitely use 140 gr. bullets of stout construction (or heavier) and definitely limit my shots to square, broadside standing bears. whitetailtrax
I would agree with Strut that it's an adequate caliber. A well place shot inside 100 yards will do the trick for you. I purchased a 7-08 for my son last year and he smoked an antelope (dropped in tracks) at 250 yards and he also made a clean kill on a mule deer buck. I was very impressed with the gun. We are shooting 140 grain factory Remington loads through a Remington Model 7 youth rifle. Good luck!
JimT
I agree with Strut also. Use a good bullet, do your part, and boo boo is in the freezer.
CrAzYCoYoTe
Wait on the subject of small rounds and taking bear. Could a 30-30 take a bear?
Guest Colorado Bob
yes on both------not my 1st choice but either will & have taken black bears. The 30-30 has taken lots of bear----it was all alot of old-timers had---it work fine back then----the bears have not gotten any tougher.
