NYBowhunter71
I recently got a Benelli Super Nova with the regular shotgun barrel (not slug barrel). I have been told that I can shoot slugs with this barrel, it just won't be as accurate. Is this advisable? How much accuracy would I lose? Tominator
Rifled barrel with sabots will be much more accurate than rifled slugs through a smoothbore; generally speaking.
bobw
Besides having a smoothbore ,it depends what choke you have...
RangerClay
Try shooting some Brenneke slugs through your gun. They are made for smooth bore guns. Be sure to get the original Brenneke Magnum Slugs. I shoot them out of my 16 ga. smooth bore with tremendous accuracy.
johnf
see my post about smooth bore accuracy +1 I failed to mention that I shoot them out of the IC choke. If you're not shooting passed 100 yards don't waste the money on a new barrel. I think if you can get close to what I'm doing at 75, then 100 should be pretty easy. too_pointer
As was said, a fully rifled barrel with sabot slugs are much more accurate, especially it will buy you longer distances also. The barrel though will be only good for slugs nothing else. For a few years, I used a smooth barrel, and used a rifled choke, I killed deer out to 100 yards with that set-up. Brenneke slugs are very good for rifled slugs. I have been using Federal sabots with great results out of my fully rifled Rem. barrel. Check to make sure your Benelli barrel is NOT overbored to to 10 ga. standards like Mossbergs are, you cannot shoots slugs through that barrel, very dangerous. too_

I shoot them out of my Nova tha that I got in 2004.
NYBowhunter71
I took my Benelli out this weekend, and was I disappointed!! It was SOO inconsistent. I could only hit an 8 in target at 50 yds twice with 15 shots!! I couldn't hit the same place twice. It was hitting High and to the left and right (by more than a foot each way)!! I was using Winchester slugs. What was I doing wrong?
MUDRUNNER
I would double check to make sure you were using rifled slugs and not sabot slugs. Also I believe you would want either a modified or improved cylinder choke.
NYBowhunter71
My Benelli has 26" smooth bore barrel and i had Full choke. I was shooting Winchester 1 oz hollow point rifled slugs.
RangerClay
1. Were you allowing the barrel to cool after the first 5 shots? 2. It can be tough shooting slugs out of a full choke barrel. 3. 15 shots from 12 guage slugs can be a real shoulder buster. You may have been flinching a little near the end. 4 Don't expect greatness from the first slug you choose. Try two or three other brands. Don't be afraid to buy more expensive slugs. NYBowhunter71
I cannot believe the amount of lead fouling I had in the barrel when I got done. Is it possible the slugs scored the barrel? Sure looks like it!

MUDRUNNER
I believe I would get a different choke and try some other slugs.
RangerClay
I cannot believe the amount of lead fouling I had in the barrel when I got done. Is it possible the slugs scored the barrel? Sure looks like it! Lead fouling is all part of slug shooting. Get a tornado brush for your cleaning rod and watch the lead fall out. johnf
I had a nova that did the same thing the first time I took it out. I couldn't hit the side of a barn. Put the IC choke in it. It may not make sence, it doesn't to me, but the more open choke makes it more accurate. Also I was having dificulty aiming with the factory sights I put on a set of adjustable turkey sights and now can get about a 2" group at 75 yards standing and sitting without a rest. Short version. IC choke, turkey sight....Goood.
bowana
Southern MI Slug Hunter I have been slug hunting for a good number of years now. Shot my first ever 4 point buck with a Remington 870 smooth bore with a BRI Sabot Slug (you guys remember these?) at 70 yards. The bottom line is this....I was lucky!. Smooth bores are meant for shot....period. If you want any kind of consistacy at all, you will buy a rifled slug barrel. There is just no way to print any kind of consistant group over 75 yards without a rifled bore.
WNY_Whitetailer
Lead fouling is all part of slug shooting. Get a tornado brush for your cleaning rod and watch the lead fall out. I agree...Those tornado brushes are the cat's you know what when it comes to removing lead...If I were you, I would go with an IC or Cylinder bore choke and try more brands of non-sabot slugs...Is there a rifled choke available for your gun? You already tried the Winchester slugs...Now try Remington Sluggers, Brenneke KO slugs or maybe some Federal TruBall slugs...You don't need the 3" models...You can get adequate performance out of the 2 3/4" versions...Why punish your shoulder any more than you need to? I used to shoot those 3" Remington sluggers...They did the job on deer but they also made my range sessions shorter than I would have liked...After about 4 boxes I was done...Had enough of the punishment...I used to fire those slugs through my smoothbore Remington 870 with a rifled choke...
