WIwhitetailhunter
I dug the tail feathers out of the freezer from the tom I shot in the spring 2006. I cleaned as much "stuff" off the feathers as I could, rubbed borax into both sides, and pinned it out on styrofoam. I have it pinned so that the side you'll see when it's done facing up. My question is, do I leave it this way for several days and then flip it over and rerub the borax into both sides? I'm wondering how to make sure it's dried completely. This is the first tail I've done. I've gotten some good info from the forum on what to do and I'm looking to you for some more. Thanks for any info.!! P.S. If this one turns out, I've got my 2007 bird to do. Figured rather than mess up on both at the same time, I'd learn from the first.
toddyboman
Where did you rub the borax? I usually rub and put as much borax as possible at the base of the quills under that flap of skin. Then pin it and check it the next day. If more borax is need i will attempt to add more but I do not unpin it for at least a week. Hope this helps. hoytbowhunter
The easier way to mount a turky fan is to pluck all the secondary feathers and put them to the side then pluck out the primary feathers 1 by 1 and number them as you go along then cut an arch of plywood and drill a small hole at the top u then lay the primary feathers out in numerical order and glue them down. There will be a small open spot to glue the beard at the bottom center you then use the secoundary fethers from largest to smallest to cover the primarys quills and thats it ur done. I've done both ways and in my oppion this way is much easier but it up to you i was just tring to give u anouther option
Bachflock
I caped my bird. Rubbed borax on it well and let it sit for about a month to 6 weeks without disturbing it (pinned). Turned out great.
WIwhitetailhunter
I guess my biggest concern is making sure I have it dried completely so I don't have problems with it later. It's easy to reapply the borax to the side facing up. I was just wondering what do you do for the side that's facing down. The way it's pinned I have no access to the down side to reapply any borax. Thanks for all the info though. Like I said earlier, this is my first attempt at this so it's a learning experience.
RTF
The tail needs to air dry out completely before you pin it down. Pour some bondo on that area after it is dry. It will hold the tail together come in the long run. Eventually the tail will rot and fall apart in the future if left untreated and bondo'd. huntinguide
i let the flies lay eggs and the maggots clean every piece of meat off, in just a couple of days. I didnt like it at first it kindof grossed me out but i found out it really works great.
