mag1
What is the best way to attach yourself to a tree while climbing and hanging a stand? I have a Lone Wolf Safety Harness, plus another similar type. It's easiy to attach once you are on stand, but is there a way to attach yourself when on the ground, and as you climb up the tree before you get into your stand? Thanks
LifeNRA
With my Hunter Safety System vest, I have a strap that goes around the tree, through the strap on my vest. Climb up a few times, then move the strap up. I do this until I reach my hunting height. Now there is a device called the FallGuy 20+ Retractor. I owned this for a short time, but returned it, never used it. I got to thinking that it would be too much stuff to carry all the time. Unless your going to hunt the same tree, ALL THE TIME! Which I don't. Below are the links about these products Hunters Safety System>>> http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/ FallGuy 20+ Retractor>>> http://integratedsafety.us/store/product_info.php/cPath/22/products_id/
IowaDeerHunter
A linemans belt is all you need. Most full body safety harnesses come with them. You will find it a LOT easier hanging a stand with one.
Ironranger
Good decision to wear it while climbing for sure. I can't believe in the past that I would go up tree pegs with no harness, maneuver around to get on my fixed stand while hugging the tree, and then attach my strap around the tree. It's amazing how many accidents do happen and I thank god I wasn't one of them. I just use my harness that comes with my Summit stand which works fine but I'd like to get one of those hunter safety system harnesses as they look pretty slick. Guest DaveGP
always wear it, i know i have not worn it while climging before and one morning i was climbing and hit an icy spot on a tree and slid down four feet... anyway see if you can use your harness like a linemans vest or if not i think its summit that lets you hang a rope from a tree and your harness hooks to that for while you climb, i believe it runs the length of the tree and you stay attached to it the whole time. mag1
The reason I'm asking is that the last 2 years I've been climbing up, then attaching harness once in stand. I know, it should be attached on the ground, but I've been having a hard time figuring out how to move up as I go. I'll have to check out some of the lineman type rope/knot options to get up the tree. My hunting is all done on public ground, and the stand/steps go on as I go up, and come off as I come down. It deffinatly would be easier and safer to be straped in as I go up, and as I hand the stand, I'm not a fan of hugging the tree while not being attached. (Lone Wolf Alpha Assult modifed to take the "easy hand hook" helps) Thanks for the input so far.
Guest DBLX1183
This past year, I had an accident the first week of November. I was climbing to a stand about 20 feet off the ground. It was a real HOT spot. So I was in a hurry, and started climbing the ladder. We had a simple (STUPID) step ladder that I put up against the tree. The last four or five feet, I had to climb using pegs and BIG tree limbs. Anyway, to make a long story short, I never climb a tree with a harness attached. I wear one when I get up there, but not on the climb. The ladder came off the tree and I fell backwards. Landing on my feet, which probably saved me, I felt a pop. Not paying attention to the pop, I noticed I had blood all over me. If was from my hand when I tried to grab something. That something was a barb wire fence. I walk back the the truck and my right leg begins to really hurt. I then cleaned myself up and decided that something was wrong with my leg. After a 2 hour trek home, I couldn't walk. I broke my right tibial plateau. The area right below the knee and on the top of the tibia. I had surgery the next Monday and I was out for the whole season. I will probably never get in a tree again, if I do I may need to find a good divorce attorney. WEAR SOMETHING TO KEEP YOU FROM FALLING WHILE CLIMBING. Trust me, it's worth it!!!! wtnhunt
I use the harness and prussic knot rope that came with my summit climber. Works well for me with my climber. Have a climbing system rope I use with another stick ladder setup, that is just a long heavy rope with a prussic knot tied on and a heavy 3000 lb rated screw type chain link. Guest realtrhunter
Using a Linemans setup should work out good. Ive used one since I started hunting. Just move the rope thats around the tree up before you climb higher. Another good thing is that is lets you use both hands to work on stuff. I get made fun of all the time by my best friend I keep telling him to use one but he dosent so I am waiting for the day that he takes a bad fall and decides he might want one. Sounds bad but thats what it is going to take.
