Andrea, regarding your superglue bandage

Andrea, I saw your post about the superglue bandaid and thought that I would weigh in.

My son and wife are fair skinned as can be, so when at the beach I put up a canopy tent. Well, they give you 6 inch tent spikes to hold down what amounts to a giant kite. I went to home depot and got four, two foot long galvanized rods cut to use as tie downs. I hammered them in with a ball pien hammer and tied off to them.

I was out fishing in the surf, catching a ton of ladyfish on the fly. They broke my leader off so I had to go back to the canopy for a new fly. The ladyfish were jumping and I was watching, furiously tying the flies. I took off from the canopy and dragged my shin across the top of the closest metal pole. When I hammered it down, it created an ultra sharp mushroom shaped edge to it. I was moving so fast, it cut about a 6 inch swath of skin about 3/4 of an inch wide and almost down to the bone. I couldn't look..one of those sickening type things you just don't want to see. I figured I would get in the water and let the saltwater do its thing. Well, on the way to the beach, a lady and her son passed in front of me...I still hadn't looked yet. She grabbed her son and made him look away, never a good sign. I got in the water and immediately, the water around me was red...seeing as how the panhandle was the shark capital of the world I got right back out.

Admittedly, I needed stitches...badly. But the fish were biting and I knew that if I got stitches I couldn't get wet again. So I went and bought a couple of the liquid band aid kits and some gauze and hydrogren peroxide. It took almost 4 applications and just over a bottle of that stuff to close it up.

To the LBA's credit, it kept the cut nice and clean and kept water out...cool. It was tough too, never yielding to the sand or rubbing.

About a week after I got back, I realized that the wound wasn't healing....the LBA was clear so I could see inside of my leg. I went to the doctor who tried to get the LBA off but couldn't. So she ended up having to scrape it off with a scalpel. Too late to stitch it at that point in time so she just cleaned it up, shook her head at me, and let me go.

Enjoy that superglue! :D I still have a nice trough on my leg and a pretty gnarly looking scar!

I have an appt. in 30 minutes to get my tetanus shot. My cut wasn't as bad as yours though!!!!! Ouch!!!

Glad you got out of the water, lol.:D

My cut is looking a lot better. I peeled the glue off yesterday, re washed it with peroxide and glued it back up. ;) I have a feeling the scar will be pretty sick. But that's okay. As long as I still have a leg/foot.;)

But you guys just don't understand these fish!

They are called ladyfish and they are essentially smaller tarpon. The biggest I caught was probably 20 inches but they are aggressive fish. They attack in schools and when they are there in the surf, you can catch them on each cast. They run this way and jump 3-4 feet in the air and then run that way and do the same. They put on quite a show.

The leg is now fine, that was 5 years ago. Probably a good thing it bled so much because sharks can smell a tiny bit of blood in the water. I was probably pulling them in from Mexico. :D

I still use the rods, but I put duct tape on the ends now and no sharp stuff. Thank God I found it instead of my son.

Thanks for reminding me what the beach looks like......ho hum....

What you have there is known as a Gulf Kingfish....aka Whiting.

Try a ladyfish on about a 7 weight fly rod and you will have your oomph! :D
