My buddy works in Tractor Supply and a guy came in and was buying some stuff and started talkin to my buddy(Adam by the way) and was wondering if he knew anything about food plots. Adam said yeah and I have some buddies that know more than I do. The guy said he owned about 3000 acres and said he dont get much time to get stuff done before season. My buddy asked him if he would be interested in leasing any of the land....he said yeah but we might could swap out some hunts if we would put in some food plots and fix a couple of feeders and stands. So he told my buddy(Adam) that he should come out sometime and check it out. He told Adam that he had a big lodge. Well we didnt think it was going to be anything like it was. We went out this morning to his place and we drove up to the lodge and couldnt believe it. It has 10 bedrooms and holds 35 people with big windows in the living room lookin out over two watersheds. Then we drove around the place on 4-wheelers for alittle while and it looked pretty good. We only made it over about 800 acres though. To make a longer story alittle bit shorter, he went on to tellin us the combination to get in the front gate and another gate we have to go through.......and where all the disk and stuff is and where the 4-wheelers go and where the keys are to the 4-wheelers!!! By this time I couldnt believe what was happening!! THEN he said next Monday when we come out he would have his business manager meet us out there with some contracts to become a full-time guide for him!!! I could not believe this was actually happening!!! But I have a question about what guides should get paid, if there are any guides out there that now. He said we would be gettin 10% for a guiden a 3 day hunt plus the hunter tipping us.....we would be gettin around $800 to $900. Is that high or low or about right for guides?? Thanks for any advice!!

i get a flat rate per gun + all tips.

you start getting risky when you go % b/c what if you arent successful for a couple weeks then you dont get paid, and its seasonal so you need to have something lined out for the summer.

We do turkey then fishing in the summer and starting in august we get ready for dove which is one of our biggest events of the year. we will take out around 500 guns opening day all over this part of the state.

The last time I inquired about what a guide was getting paid from an Outfitter the number was around $150/day. That doesn't include tips. The Outfitter provided room and board for the guide too. It's been about 8 years though since I got that number for a guide so I would think it would be a little more now than it was then.

I guess if this is a percentage basis deal though you only get paid for the booked hunts you actually guide. If there's any slack time you're off without pay. For that reason I share the same concern that huntinguide mentioned.

Also, remember...tips aren't automatic. The more effort you put into guiding your clients, the better the tip generally is. That means you should plan to wear out some boot leather scouting, glassing, etc. for deer while your hunters are hunting and before they arrive. You find a nice buck, describe it, and then have the hunter at least lay eyes on the buck you described and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah I've been scouting alot here lately trying to find some big bucks for people thats gonna come in come bow season. He said he already knows quite a few people that will come up from texas for sure, so Im tryin to find em now and stay with em, but keep my distance!! We're goin back today to discuss alittle more technical stuff and I will keep my eyes open on the pay and such things. I really appreciate all the feedback, comments, and tips and will DEFINATELY keep all of them in mind. Big thanks again to everyone that has replyed!!

Wow sounds like a great job. Bet you'll spend long hours in the office;) haha. Good luck!

Yeah I will be, and already am, spending long hours in the office but LOVE doing it!! My dad said that I wont be able to hunt as much as usual(which I know I wont) but I told him I dont mind it since I will be gettin paid to take other people huntin and just bein able to be out in the woods all the time. But I will still be huntin though, just not as much!!

10% of the total cost of the hunt per person, plus tips???

I myself am a Guide/Outfitter in 2 Sates and Saskatchewan( indian tribal land that is how I bypass the law of Canada)

I work for a flat fee, per day, plus a flat fee per day for my vehicle, plus room and board.

Remember, as a guide, we are able to write off many, many things as expenses. You must also pay your vehicle as you have fuel, oil, filters, tires, wear and tear, and maint.

Please, get EVERYTHING in writing. When I am not out in the field, I run my Wife's Law firm as well. IN WRITING! IN WRITING! Always get it in writing.

Bill Jordan himself, the owner of this site will say the same thing.

If this is in fact the agreement that you will be working under, it does sound pretty good. I get these dollars and cents figures, but, I also make sure that I am allowed to take a nice Buck as well near the end of the season.

You appear to have had a dream dropped into your lap and I am soo very happy for you. I wish you much success on this endeavor and I hope that it leads to a larger operation for your self. Make sure that you get comment forms from everyone that you take out as a referrence. That is always a great thing to have.

Once again. Congratulations to you Sir.

I get paid $100 per day plus tips to guide. I have nothing invested and no other expenses. Make the trip enjoyable for the hunter and the tip will be there if they score or not.

Silver is right on with what he said.

Some of my biggest tippers were my unsuccessful clients. No joke. I insist on having the time of my life and theirs, every day in the field. I want the clients to be able to joke and bash me in a humorous way.

I had a client blow 5 or 6 shots in 4 days. He had " Murphy's Law " in his pocket, but, he tipped beyond belief.

Always no matter what you do, give the client the time of their life. The rest is cake. Enjoy your guiding this year.

You will definately not be hunting as much as you have in past years. I quickly found that out when I guided. It is still a blast to be around guys that come in from the woods with stories about what they've seen, but it's not the same as experiencing it for yourself. Like others have said, tips aren't automatic, but if you put a guy on a good deer, 9 times out of 10 he will thank you.

It is definately not easy work, but it is very rewarding when some guy pulls into camp and can hardly talk because of the deer he just shot.

I would get everything in writing before hand. That is where I made my mistake. The guy I was working for took advantage of me and there was nothing I could do. I made some awesome friends and some good tips though.
