Guest beagleman
I recently bough a Mossberg 500 20ga combo. Never really been a Mossberg guy before. Honestly I have knocked them for the forearm rattle in the past. But I was looking for a 20ga combo and I compaired it with a 870 combo. And found myself walking out with a Mossberg. The question I have is what type of slugs would you recommend for the 24" fully rifled barrel? I dont have the money at this time for the top of the line stuff like the Hornaday SST slugs. But Im sure there is a very nice load out there that some of you use for under 10 bucks a box. Id love to find something in the $5 range. I know most of the time you get what you pay for. But when you make as little as I do cost does matter.
LifeNRA
As with any gun, its best to shoot different loads to see what the gun likes! Try some Federal sabots to start. If it shoots good for you, great! If not try another brand. They costs about $8-$11 per box, depending where you get them. Good luck! Guest beagleman
I almost bough a box of those the other day. But just like knocking Mossberg, Federal was the one ammunition maker that Ive had trouble with in the past. But just like Mossberg in the last few years Ive seen more and more write ups about positive things coming from these 2 companys. Wouldnt it be a stinker if I killed my first deer this year with a Mossberg and Federal ammo...lol
LifeNRA
Both gun and ammo in the past have preformed flawlessly for me the past 5-6 years. I prefer Federal in all their ammo. Seems to shoot the best for me. Now in my 835 Ulti-Mag, Winchester Supremes 3.5" #6 does an awesome job! But this gun is only for turkey too. Just don't over-oil the slide action of the Mossberg, actually I use WD-40 in mine and hasn't been a problem at all. Keeping it clean and oiled properly will give you many years of service. Tominator
Look at the Lightfield slugs if you can find them. Reasonable price and very accurate; at least out of my 870 they are.
EKYhunter
Try the Remington Copper soilds as well as the Wichester BRI. These would both be under $10.00 a box, especially in the 20 gauge.
too_pointer
I found Federals were the most accurate in my Rem. I would shoot some different loads and see what is the most accurate out of your gun. Most slugs will work fine on dropping game, accuracy is the most important thing to look for. too_
