How do ya's do it?

I have been turkey hunting, (not killing), for the last two years and have had no luck. I love the sport but do not have anyone to show me the ropes. How do you locate turkeys in advance? Do they like the same roosts night after night unless pressured?? I own 70 acres and that is about the only place I currently have that I can hunt turkeys. I need to locate them there if possible. I have been using slates/friction and push button calls, decoys and the like.

With expereince you'll get a feel for it.

Spend your time before the season getting your gun shooting well and knowing your limitations.

Getting a good setup is probably the most important part of harvesting the bird in my opinion. Calling is over rated. You really don't need to be that good to take a turkey home every spring. In most cases less is more when it comes to calling turkeys in.

But if you do your time scouting and eliminate barriers and setup where the turkeys want to be you'll be more successful. Then be patient enough to let it happen.

That's the toughest part. Learning when to stay and when to make a move on a bird. More times than not guys move too early and bump a bird.

Then just have a fun safe hunt.

Good Luck!

Yes they respond too a coyote call, i normally use an owl hooter. That seems too work really well, and give a few crow calls during the day that also makes them gobble.

I agree with everyone else. Turkeys are predictable if they are not pressured. Listen in the mornings and evenings for them and it wont be long before you figure out where a few like to hang out. If you can figure out where they are going when they fly down then thats even better. Its really not a whole lot different then patterning that big buck in the summer. wink.gif
