Guest 257Roberts
Ok Encore guys. I leave for colorado in september and was looking for some guidiance on loads, powder, gr. bullet ect. for Elk. Keep in mind we will be shooting open sites so shots of 100 yds or less. I'm thinking the heaviest bullet i can find (370 gr. Maxi-Ball) and max the load out (150 gr. powder) but i have heard that you loose accuracy with the max 150 gr. powder. Also, need opinions on Jim Shockey Gold. I have never tried it but bought some this weekend and i'm gonna give it a try. this will be the first trip out there for me so i am hoping to have as many factors in my favor as i can stand. EKYhunter
Some guns like the 150 grain load and some do not. You'll have to try yours and decide. Muzzle loaders can be tricky and often the best accuracy is achieved with 90, 100, 110 grains etc. You just have to see what your gun prefers. Same holds for bullet weight and type. I've never killed an Elk but I think that any quality bullet weighing 250 gr or better would work. The main thing would be shooting your gun as accurately as your ability will let you and having proper shot placement.
