wtnhunt
Sounds good Todd. Planning to work up a site for a fall perennial plot here this weekend. Will be shooting for planting in mid September.
toddyboman
This is by far the earliest we have ever planted. About a month to be exact. Dad's main reason for planting earlier is because we(he) want a better stand of turnips up when bow season gets here.
rhine16
I think i'm gonna try to plant labor day weekend. Still may be too early here, but hopefully not.
MUDRUNNER
Sweet! How did the deer like the turnips last year? I've been working a small plot the last few weekends for turnips, essex rape, and winter peas, but since our season doesn't start till Oct. 1 I'll probably hold off planting till the first or second weekend in September. wtnhunt
Been so dry here, I will not plant early Todd. Planning to plant an acre or so of a clover and rye mix from hamann farms, and a mix of brassicas also from hamann farms. Post up some pics of your progress when you get a chance. toddyboman
Sweet! How did the deer like the turnips last year? This is the 3rd or 4th year we have planted turnips and on our farm and the deer LOVE THEM!!!:) We plant a total of 3 plots. They are about 2 to 3 acres in size. The turnip tops come up early and the deer will eat the green tops. After the actually turnips are ripe and good the deer then eat them. The deer will either pull them right out of the ground or dig them out. Our turnip plots last all through the fall and winter. I know last year here in MO we had snow and the deer were digging through the snow to get to the turnips. In January I could gaurantee myself to see at least 15 deer in our 2 acre food plots that had turnips. So on our farm the deer absolutly LOVE THEM!! Sam16
Very cool Todd. I planted my small plots about a month ago. I just hope the deer dont eat them up before October. Good luck with your plot, sounds like you got it figured out.
toddyboman
Well this morning we got a nice little rain shower. Hopefully enough to make our food plots pop. Hopefully some more rain is on the way. Nothing worse then having our plots come up only to fried from lack of rain. Come on mother nature cooperate with us :D
Sam16
I dont know about you, but in Northern Illinois we have had plenty of rain. Hopefully it keeps up down by you. So far we've been blessed. Maybe if you do a rain dance the next storm will come down by you...

PotashRLS
Greetings from drought plagued Northeast Wisconsin. I am very interested in hearing the success that turnips are bringing other hunters. The deer in our area won't touch them. They grow beatifully but the hard frosts lay the leaves down and come spring, the turnips are rotting in the ground. Looks like a speed bump food plot. "No Plow, Winter Greens and Secret Spot" are our choice for fall annuals. Experimenting with many types of seed gets expensive but will pay off with your deer telling you what they like and when they will eat it! toddyboman
I am very interested in hearing the success that turnips are bringing other hunters. We have plated them for several years now and the deer on our farm LOVE them!! As I have stated they eat on them from the moment they come up till they are completely gone. I took these last year from my stand. On this particular night there was a total of 18 deer in this plot. At one time 13 deer was in this 2 acres plot. 5 bucks and 7 does and yearlings. It was a fun night. THis does is enjoying This buck was out checking everything in site and doing a little eating but his mind was on one thing It was late so pic is bad. Last year during rifle season I shot this buck off that exact same plot.
Sam16
I hope they like them in Northern Illinois. I'm sure they will once they find it. Last i saw my plots of mixed brassicas and clover, including rival top turnips and purple top turnips, they were maybe 6 inches high and the deer havent touched them yet. This is the first year we've planted them, so maybe they havent figured it out yet. I'm not too worried about it, they'll find it eventually. Those pictures look promising though!
