this is my 2nd year coyote hunting. last year i went about 4or5 times and never saw the first one. so i bought a jonny stewart digital preymaster over the summer. since deer season is my #1 i just started yote hunting about 2wks ago. yesterday was my3rd time out this year. we had a 20in snow last wed. and theres still about 4-5in on the ground. I have 20yrds of speaker wire so i set my rabbit decoy out at about 30yrds. i was on my second stand in an old cowpasture with lots of sinkholes and fencelines when i saw 2 about300 yrds on the edge of the woods they must have known something was up because the just milled around the edge of the fencerow and never came out( i couldnt get a clean shot it was too thick) By the way i hunt with a savage 12bvss with a weaver6-24 in 243. anyways not 30 sec after i saw them head back into the woods i caught movement to my right on an oldgrown ujp fence row. it was a coyote at about 60 yards as soon as i saw him he took off after my decoy i was trying to find him in my scope. when i finally found himand shot he was almost right on my decoy. i thought i hitem because he jumped about 3feet in the air and took off i shot again as he ran up the hill but missed both times. guess i wouldve been better off with a shotgun haha.

just thought id share my first semi-successful hunt with you guys.

Re: finally called one in

Thanks guys....yeah i m really fired up about going again. Should i stick with the 243 or shoud i take a turkey gun? im really bummed out about missing him. everywhere i hunt requires a prettygood walk so taking 2 guns is out of the question. are they all gonna come like that or was that an exeption??

Re: finally called one in

If you're hunting in open areas I would stick with the rifle. Trying to predict what a coyote is going to do is like trying to predict the weather next year. I haven't had one attack my decoy yet but one thing is for sure a decoy defintely helps. Especially hunting by yourself. Usually they will try to come in down wind also so watch for that also.
