stand height?

Hi:

Stand height varies with the individual and the terrain that you are hunting.

*All in all I try to find a tree (or place) where I can make a comfortable shot at a deer and where he or she will least likely recognize me. It's no good to hang a stand at 15 feet if it's in the wrong location or too obvious to the deer. Stand height is usually one of my last concerns when hanging a stand.

*If hunting very thick cover it may be impossible to hang a stand very high due to surrounding tree limbs interfering with a good shot.

*If hunting a hill side you may have to hang a stand higher so that deer approahing from the up-hill-side are not in a direct line of sight (or scent).

*The tree may also dictate the stand height. Most trees are not ideal for stands and you must find a place on the tree that the stand fits into and blends the hunter with the surrounding cover. I like to find a place where there are some surrounding branches and good back cover to break up my outline.

*By the way: my lowest stand is at 12 feet and my highest (one time ago) was 38 feet. Most of my stands are about 20 -24 feet which I am very comfortable in. I bow hunt these stands.

Good luck to all

what's the best height to hang a stand at? i've been putting them at 14 - 17 ft, is that a good level or should I go higher? keep in mind I don't like to get really high.

Thats plenty if you don't like going higher! You will sit still if your comfortable! But if you start getting busted then you might want to think about it! I usually go about 20-25 feet. But like others said too, it all depends how the lay of the land is. You could be 30 feet up, but the hill right behind you is at your level. Allowing the deer to spot you as they come over.

Usually 15 to 20 feet depending where im hunting. Once I had a stand at about 10 feet in a cedar but I had enough cover and background they never saw me!! So just whatever the terrain your hunting will let you do and you feel comfortable with. Good luck!!

I am always 15-20 feet, terrain dependant. There are times that I only go 12 feet. Usually when I am located on a side hill with a downslope, covering a well used travel corridor.

It all comes down to personal prefference, terrain and conditions. No one set up is a bad set up. It is what ever fits the situation.

Good luck to you all this 2007 fall deer season.

I agree completely that it applies to each situation. Im a firm believer that 15-20 is perfect stand height. But, after scouting this weekend in North Dakota I found a public hunting area that 7 good bucks (120 and better) filtered into from some hills to the north. The tree rows in the public area are maybe 6 yrs old and only about 2o ft high. They are bushy trees and I will probably only be able to get 8ft off the ground before it is impossible to connect any stand to the tree. So with that said Ill be 8ft up the trees and probably threading a needle with the wind. But, gotta hunt where the deer are. hopefully it works out.

Most of my stands are 12-15. It all depends on the terrain and other cover obstacles that I'm faced with. My lowest stand is only about 9 feet, but that has been my most productive stand in the last couple years. I'm in great cover from the branches, yet I still have 3 real good shooting lanes from this tree. It doesn't matter how high or low you are if you don't have some added cover, you're going to stick out like a sore thumb. And always watch the wind.

I would say in general, height is a preference. I usually go 15-18 ft. Good camo, wind direction, and scent control, back ground, early or late season, and topography should be taken into consideration. I practice my movement in the tree so that when a deer is coming, I have my body motion under control.
